Need help with driver!!

if you are using a pc psu the white wire is neg 5 volts and the orange is + 3.3 volts. that will give you 8.8volts check with volt meter.

My PSU combines the white and purple wire so that it is alway -5V. That way, it works the same as a white wire if the positive end is a positive voltage because the positive end will only turn on when I flip the switch anyway. Anyway, I hope that will work better than what I have right now, but i'm a bit concerned that it might not put enough amperage through the purple wire, after all it is really only designed to power a single LED. I wish I had one of those PSUs that had standby USB power...

I hope you are using a Test Load and NOT you Laser Diode for testing...

Yeah lol I have been testing with the test load, but I am going to try with my diode soon as it is operating (barely) within spec. If it operates better at 8.3V, I will use that instead.

Do you have another LM317 available? You could make a variable voltage regulator with it, and use this to regulate your 12V supply down to whatever you need. A useful addition to the workbench.

how do you make an lm317 regulate voltage and not current?
