Need advice on 50mW 589nm spartan issue.

@UltimateKaiser With the laser at 87F the power is at 15mW and the mode hopping settles down some and tends to be a lopsided TEM 01 however it still jumps around a lot. There is no temperature point I am comfortable trying at which the output stabilizes within reason. I will definitely be awaiting DL's response to my email to see how they would like to approach this one. Pretty certain it is a botched alignment.

What do you mean misalignment?

UltimateKaiser suggested in the first few posts that the YAG may be misaligned in this 589nm spartan causing the crazy power drop and mode hopping.

Yeah..... that crazy power drop isn't normal at about halfway into it's duty cycle. Back when I had a 589 Spartan mine would work fine until the 1min duty cycle was reached and would quickly fade and drop in power after that point. That's when I knew it was time to turn it off :D

Yeah, I was using the power drop the same way but it just seemed a little bit too quick and abrupt. So glad I got myself a meter. I'd be ecstatic if this thing was a solid 50mW +- 5mW for it's duty cycle. Or at least hold 50mW+ throughout at TEM 00 or near TEM 00.

Could the issue be due to the driver and not the module? I think the module would go through a lot more quality testing than the driver does

Already ruled that out. Current draw stays steady at 1.725-1.730 amps. With how fragile these are. It is VERY likely it lost alignment in shipping.

are you measuring that between the battery and the driver or the driver and the module?

Not exactly a laser I am comfortable enough to try taking apart to even attempt measuring the current to the pump diode. At this point I am just awaiting a response from DL which will probably come while I am asleep.

All of my tests and measurements were done without any obtrusive means used to do so.
If I had built it, sure I would rip it apart and jiggle things around. Just not on a SFG DPSS laser worth half a grand.

good call, well let us know what DL says about it

I would not mess with it---was expensive---you are not happy with it---just return it for refund or exchange.

DL web site says :
"Dragon Lasers are pleased to offer a 7 day satisfaction guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied with your product, you may return it within 7 days of receipt for a full refund minus shipping cost. Absolutely no questions asked."

"Before returning any product, you must first contact us for a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA). You will be sent an RMA code, product return address and return shipping instructions. No returns will be accepted with out an RMA."

Probably what is going to end up happening sadly. Love the wavelengths, but not all the issues this particular unit has.
