wow, so, essentially each wire is its own direct injection laser diode? I would bet that it gives a much nicer beam, too! Although it might be a bit fragile compared to a vcsel, maybe it have a rather large upside, like perhaps stability or gain efficiency or something. They do mention that the small physical size can help make faster switching easier, and from the description of the process, it sounds much easier to manufacture than current horizontal diret injection diodes.
