I harvested a diode from a 'mysterious' sled and the diode has 4 pins out. I would explain why the extraction was a little more difficult, and i searched for 4 pin diodes but cant really figure it out. I also checked sam's laser faq and didn't find anything helpful for this diode.

What type of diode is this and what is the pin out?

Its probably an IR diode, 808nm

CD diodes are about 790nm .

It might be a red and IR diode, so the case will be negative ( touch the brass looking bit with the negative ), and any of the pins with a black ring around the bottom will be a positive. One of the pins will be a photo diode, the others may be an IR laser and a red Laser.

DVD/CD drives use 780nm NIR.
808 diodes are for pump diodes in DPSS green (and blue?) laser systems.

The pins are probably:

one for case
one for 650nm red
one for 780nm NIR
one for photodiode

EDIT: The power levels depend on the type of drive. If it's DVD burner then you can expect maybe a +100mW red and a ~80mW NIR.

Bet you to it :)

I think nearly all DPSS lasers use 808nm LDs for a pump.

thanks for the info, unfortunately i don't have a circuit to power this diode up =\

'cept you were 10 nm off with the CD diode, accidental or otherwise =P
