Thanks! I gotta agree, it is not the simplest build :( But damn worth the effort!

Hello,
I just joined today. This thing is Awesome!I know I have alot of reading to do on these forums to learn what the terminolgy is for a lot of things, but can you tell me about the casting that holds the lasers?Does it normally hold 3 beams at once,or did you modify it?Also, what do you call that thing(looks like an old projector slide)that made the beams split into lots of dots?So far all I have is a couple pen-type lasers(red),and a double-ended red tube laser that came from a tire-balance machine I made a neat mount for I'm trying to find a use for.Congrats on a awesome build!!

Looks like a nice build!

Makes me want to rig one of these, even though bluray is far from ideal for color mixing, unless you project onto something fluorescent like paper.

Yep. I want to learn more about those tiny-ass blue diodes or assemblies they use in those new projectors. We could probably get one into an aixiz or similar sized module :D

Welcome to LPF! The casting that holds the lasers is built by Sightfx and is called the "WhiteFusion" Kit. Look for it in the Pro Shop. Sightfx can pretty much build an entire kit for you if you're willing to pay. The thing that split the beam is called a diffraction grating. They can be had for very cheap.

Thx for the reply!Even though I'm disabled,I still have a pretty full machine shop in my garage next door(lathe, mill, etc.)I may have too look at other pics, and do it the "cheapway" for me.I definately have to read up on lens, prisms, etc.,and look through all my junk drawers to see what can be used for a laser.I'm used to tinkering/building almost anything mechanical,as I was a machinist/fabricator for 20 yrs before I got hurt, but other than a pointer to drive my pets nuts, and the tube I built a few years back, all these new lasers are new to me.Glad to be a part of another new hobby!!

Seems like you and T_J already have some similarities. That was his post from the "What Do You Do for A Living" thread although I know he's mentioned his disability before. When I worked at the snackbar at my pool (I'm only 17) I dropped a HUGE grill on my finger and had to get stitches. That's the worst work related injury I've sustained, thank god.

In terms of cheap optics and such if you have 2+ small mirrors and can mount them to a motor you will have made what is known as a spirograph. Oh by the way the mirrors have to be mounted at a very slight angle. The more mirrors you add the crazier the effects. Especially when you have the ability to adjust the mirrors' speed with a potentiometer. One mirror on a motor leads to a time tunnel effect (an easy way to make is to just mount a mirror to a computer or house fan). A tunnel gun is a device that can be mounted on the front of a laser. It uses one stationary mirror and one spinning mirror to make the beam go forwards. All these effects are most visible with fog in the air.

Here's a great pic posted by Jaseth (Seb) to help explain:

Just some quick youtube vids I grabbed:

Thank You for the info. After a few nights of snooping around on youtube,I already ran across FML's Tunnel Gun,and a few Spiro vids, that's what gave me inspiration to dig out my old box of stuff from when I got the tube laser.I found a couple of motors like you showed from Jaseth plus a couple like I drew below(if it shows up)that have to have a few mirrors replaced from being knocked around.

FML,I also apologize for straying from the thread.:shhh:

Wow man how do you get so many different patterns with your spiro? Custom built I assume... This is soo sweet I can't wait to get mine! What powers are you running again? That's one bright looking magenta beam shot there (second to last pic), or is that just the bluray?

1 suggestion on the green laser, if you buy a high powered module (80-100mW) and turn the current down to match the other colors, the laser wont even get warm. This may not work for everyone but it worked great in my setup and the laser maitains a very stable output. Doing this may save you from having to cool the module down, it just looked like you did alot of work there to accomplish that. just my 2 cents

I am quite busy with other thing so I dont have time to look around for this info, so FML could you please answer the quick questions.

Is that a 3 mirror spiro? what kind of motors and control do you have over them? I was planning on maybe buying a set of three stepper motors and drivers for each to have speed decent control, it would only be around $50 for this. I'm just looking to replicate the what you have going on your spiro. It looks great! I like all the different patterns and how you change between them quickly.

My green module is seriously underpowered and just crap. I had to do all this extra work to make it decent.

It is a 3 mirror set-up, with the DC motors from CD drives that push the tray in and out of the drive. The controller is 555 timers with adjustable duty cycle (PWM). Two of the motors are reversible.

Do you have any schematics of the wiring posted on herre anywhere?I'd like to do a similar set-up if you don't mind me copying.Nice job either way!
