Here is my home built ruby laser in action.

ruby laser? what wavelength is that? also, how many mW is that? is it really cutting steel?

This is a ruby laser. The wavelength is 694nm (at edge of the visible range, corresponding to dark red). It's a pulse of light that last less than a millisecond, yet the pulse is many thousands of watts (not sure of exact measurement). It took 3 pulses to cut through the spoon. It will burn tiny holes in steel when focused.
 
Wow jarrod those are some very impressive lasers. The beams are gorgeous! Nice work.
 
Well yeah, I understand the smoke, but how did you capture an event only a few milliseconds long? is it a special camera... or long exposure?...
 
Ruby lasers are so awesome, but I prefer a nice Copper Vapor...5000kW of golden glory...

So it has 5 million Watts of peak power? Is this laser with your employer? How many pulses per second? Is it used to perform materials processing, such as cutting, drilling, etc?

Please tell me more. And send some more pics, if possible. You've got me interested.
