I was very wary of the capacitor bank when I was messing about inside but they don't seem to hold much of a charge when it's switched off. But it's best to be safe when you consider how much charge PC power supply caps can hold shortly after being used, so after checking for voltage (out of interest) I went and shorted them all anyway.
I'm also not sure what sort of transformer is used, or what amount of current it's capable of, so I steer well clear when it's switched on. As I said, I'll hopefully find a potted PSU on eBay at some point, but laser gear seems rarer than hens' teeth in UK and I don't fancy shipping heavy/fragile from overseas.
I think this laser dates back to the early 90's according to the seller and judging by the components used that seems about right.
