My first DPSS took a $#¡¥

I just recently acquired This laser of a group bye. It worked fine all last weekend. Last night I turned it on was working with a really weird divergence. When I pointed the laser down it shut off (beam was lost??) Pointed the laser back up it turned back on. I did a couple figure eights and it shut off for good with a rattling inside. I think it is either the expanding lens or the k p t crystal. But I really have no idea being so new. I have some pictures. Any input anyone can throw my way would be greatly appreciated

Is it something I can fix??

I read this stuff just to learn a little more seeing how this is the first time I have really even have anything to do with a green laser.

Been working and reading everything I can about the blueness of it all lol so green DPSS is a new learning curveu.........

It's going to be extremely difficult for someone without experience assembling DPSS lasers to fix that.

I'd just replace it.

Brass piece looks like the c-shaped mount for the non-linear optics, with the first half of the beam expander glued onto it. You'd have to get that back in the right place and rotate it to get the maximum output, then set it in place with some non-outgassing adhesive. PITA. but if you have GOGGLES and time and patience and hands that don't shake, you could give it a go. Even with goggles, though, keep in mind that most goggles for green will block green, but might not do a thing for the 808nm pump diode, which is probably putting out near half a watt.

I know that's what I was told about the 808. I have no glasses so I guess im not messing with it. Its not worth it ........I still think im gonna take it apart and just look at all of it (battery out) and if I get some glasses one day fix it ......or send it to a respected member that might wanna do it for me .....any takers lol let me know

Just sucks cuz it was a Damn good laser and I never droped it got to use it all last weekend so??? Kinda scary cuz I've been researching the stuff for a couple months now and it is my first green laser and I had no idea of the 808 almost 500mw inside it...... (still so much to learn)

Ok got home from work and yanked the shaft out. Got this out witch I believe is the c-shaped optics.

There is a mark on the side of it were the adhesive was, so lining it up is no problem. I will stick right on it. and stay put. I face it away from me (down a long hallway) to see a green beam.... Nothing??? Is the diode dead??? As I said in the first post it was working till it started rattling so i just figured it fell off.

Could it have shorted out ???
killed the diode???
Safty kill switch/disable cuz of 808 ???

without looking at the diode, try pointing it at the table, away from you, whatever, just don't look, and turn it on and take a picture. You're not looking for the picture to be sharp or anything, but with a digital camera, you are more likely to see the IR radiation, in the form of a white-pinkish light. It will exit the diode junction much like a flashlight beam, but invisible to your eyes, so be careful.

If you want pics of what it's supposed to look like take a look back though the GB thread. I took some photo's of mine mostly disassemble. I'm afraid I'd have to agree with what's already been said though, even if you could get everything back together you may just end up blasting yourself and anyone around you with IR.

One way you can tell if the pump diode is dead, get some googles that block 808nm and very carefully turn it on facing AWAY from you, then use a digital camera to see if you see any light output. Most CCD cameras will pick this up.

Looks like the expanding lens is directly sitting on the ktp mount. A bit strange, But why did you remove the KTP? Now you have to realign it. Hope you didn´t kill the diode too by removing the KTP.

However. If you still can put this together and are getting a strong green beam out of it, you are still lucky to get it fixed.

Just fix it on the desk like in your pics to aviod falling the host over and look at a 90 degrees angle at the host and the green beam to realign the expanding lens.

This way you won´t harm your eyes. But be carefull not to look on top of it within lets say a 45 degrees angle. I realigned my expanding lens this way as the beam was passing the collimating lens right at its edge.

And if you really want to be on the safe side. Measure the current first. Then reduce it to a level where the KTP is still putting a bit of green. Realign everything and turn the current back to the level it was before.

I even suggest not to play with the pot but reducing the voltage.

Yes, this was the problem from the start, from what I understand, the crystal holder broke off.

Good tips. Keep out of the beam's path, use lower voltage source, etc.

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond I have been working a lot. I figured out the power source problem It was actually pretty stupid on my part. When I pulled the shaft out ( yea I know ) it pulled everything inside behind it about a quarter inch so the battery was wiggling around in there not making contact. But I finally managed to push it back down But then it fell out the bottom So as of right now I have it all dismantled. Have not really had time to mess with it.

I am just going to part it out and cut my losses. Host is sold already. It's going to complete two other projects that I had so it just made sense.
