So i have been playing around with ebay lasers for a while (just pulling them apart etc to get an idea on how they all work etc) Until i felt comfortable enough in constructing one worth a couple of hundred dollars.

So i have finally finished building this laser! My host got here and within 20-30 minutes it was finally alive!!!! So here is the build thread as promised!

Here is everything ready to be assembled.

Firstly i used my cir clip pliers to removed the heatsink from the host.

I then had some old tailcap switches laying around and i needed a positve terminal for the batteries so i figured one of these would suffice.

Here is a little trick i do when grinding down circular objects. The grinder makes the object spin on the bolt. Getting us a pretty round and nice fit.

As you can see i got it to all together in the heatsink quite nicely. The earth is attached to the side of the plastic that is pressed in.

Congrats on buying some cool stuff man, wish I had some fancier hosts, but I'm too cheap.

If you need 16340's (cr123 size) these are great and ship from aus: 2X 16340 RCR 123 Protected DLG ICR16340J 3 7V Rechargeable Lithium ION Battaries | eBay
I have 4 and they are great, can deliver more current than my cheap 18650's.

You can also buy 18650's from that place if you need them. This seller sells legit cells(That wasn't supposed to rhyme so well), and ship from Australia so you don't have to deal with sea freight.

For chargers look at the nitecore intellecharger, generally you want a decent charger so you don't damage your cells.

Awesome i will buy off them :) I hate the waiting time from overseas im to impatient at times :P Think i will buy both types of batteries just to see which i prefer once constructed. And im not to fussed about spending the money anymore lol already spent around $200 on this laser may aswell spend a bit more XD
 
You need to choose batteries based on what kind of driver you have. Basically there are 2 kinds of drivers, buck drivers and boost drivers, buck drivers run on 2 cells and boost drivers run on 1, so check what driver you got, if its rated for around 8.4v its a buck driver.
 
Thought i would add an update to the build thread. I have since found a few awesome things in my shed. I am a boilermaker by trade. (work with steel for those who dont know) Anyway i found an aluminium servo from a transmission. I was able to make it a perfect fit for a heatsink untill my host arrives.

Secondly i have ripped an old laptop battery apart. Inside 4 panasonic NCR18650D so i have this beast powered off 2 of these! The batteries all read 3.5v aswell so that was a bonus. Also got another 6 out of an old drill battery XD I keep pulling things apart in search for batteries its becoming an addiction!
 
great lookin laser! any pics of the host? And super awesome bumper on that... idk rover? I love the LED's
 
Gq Patrol :) and i have made a heatsink with switch and batteries basically so i can use it till the host arrives. Should be here this week in theory. But here are a couple of pics of the host on its way :)

So i have been a little bored and figured while i wait for my msv3 host to arrive i should try modifying/making a host for another build down the track. I used a maglight from a local camping store. Cut the end off and made a quick heatsink untill i cast a permanent one inside.

Here is a picture of it thus far. And yes i know it still needs painted etc :)

Yeh it is bro! I am going to be casting an aluminium heat sink straight into the head of this.

And thanks for the rep bro! i have around 10 or so ebay pens in pieces already lol ill check it out tho. :)
 
Really nice DIY host, casting might get a better fit than one turned on a lathe although you might have a little trouble getting the hole for the module straight. A casting of the whole head you would also have more thermal mass than a regular mag heat sink.

If you got some scrap copper around you could try cast a copper heat sink which will be way better than aluminium. Only problem copper melts at a higher temperature.

I was contemplating copper. I rip coils and heatsinks out of everything that doesn't work to do things like this. And getting the hole straight is quite easy as i will be welding up a jig so it will sit in place 100% May even do a build thread/tutorial on ways to do this at home for people who cant weld as there are some other ways. Would be cool for people to be able to make their own heatsinks if they where interested.
