I built this with the intention to be the first to make a spirograph with five motors, as I had not seen any with more than 4 at the time. That was about a year ago and I do not know if I am the first to make one with 5 motors anymore.
As I have also found out more than 4 motors is pointless, as it is very hard to control the image and make it look good after 4 motors. People who have never seen a spirograph before have told me that the random laser squiggles one gets with more than 3 motors still looks good, but I personally strive for symmetrical shapes.
I hope to make another one with only 3 or 4 hobby motors, PWM controlled, with a 50 or 100mw laser, all controllable through DMX on a lightboard. An XY scanner would be way better but that's a bit out of my budget at the moment
