Hi there, I set about building the DDL MXDL flashlight mod a few weeks ago and I ran into a load of walls when it came to suppliers who would deliver to the UK. So I figured I'd try to save the next person who lived in the UK the hassle of finding the parts... Here goes:

I got the LM317, rectifier and capacitor from maplin: www.maplin.co.uk

My mate recently told me about rapid (after I bought all the parts) they are much cheaper than maplin: www.rapidonline.com

I bought a pioneer 115D off ebay: www.ebay.co.uk the sellers name was "storage-products" here is a link to the item: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pioneer-DVR-1...Z3754QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

But Amazon do it for cheaper (thanks robjdixon) : http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-li...44635?ie=UTF8&s=gateway&qid=1206531944&sr=8-1

Oh and laserman has a guide on how to take it apart: http://www.laser-man.co.uk/2006/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=79&Itemid=6

I bought the MXDL itself from DX

I bought the heatsink from jayrob: he ships the UK for about $5 and has 1st class service!

and finally I bought the aixiz blank from www.hightechdealz.com for the excelent price of $4

So there you go! thats how I got the parts for my MXDL laser- I should post some pics in the multimedia section when the aixiz blank arrives.

i just bought my 2nd one today :-/ :-/
i burnt out my first one soldering i think

yup soldering is the prime death of them... tin them lightly and then have your wire tinned put small sleeves on your wire and make the connection with no extra solder just another tap of the iron then move the sleeves up heatwell clips on the pins do good for this to sap the heat from the diode

OK, I successfully soldered the ld ty tomcat

btw it takes less than 5 mins to harvest if you use the guide by laser-man- thanks! ;D

I did not have any heatshrink tubing but the diode works perfectly. I was just wandering if anyone knew of an alternative like superglue or something common like that

You could use hot glue, but if you did a good job soldering the leads to the diode I don't see the need to use anything else.

thx for the tip, the soldering is alright, i'm just a little nervous of a short circuit when I put the whole thing together

I think I was quite lucky the solder just stuck to the wire easily (I couldn't even find the flux) the only problem is that it is not flexible wire so I don't know how it will fare when the whole circuit is crammed into an MXDL :-/

I hope all goes well with the second diode rob

The wire is one of the most important parts of the build! If you have and old computer mouse that your are not using, take apart the cord. Inside the cord, you will find several strands of fine wire, which is excellent for building. Very flexible and perfect for these laser builds. I got my heat shrink tubing from here:
http://www.allelectronics.com/matrix/Heatshrinkable_Tubing.html
Scroll down to the bottom of that page. There is an assortment pack that has lots of different sizes and colors for only about $12 bucks...

thx for the info jay! i'm just wandering whether it is worth risking the diode- I think I will try with the not-so flexible wire first as once the whole thing is put together I won't have to bend the wire anymore and if the solder joints break when I'm putting the thing together then I won't have to desolder!

Another thing to worry about with non-flexible wire is the diode pins breaking. :o
It doesn't happen often, but it's really easy to do... just a warning.

i am goiing to make my driver circuit to fit inside my mxdl, so i know the wire length needed

oh, and btw jayrob, i got the resistors. Thanks a lot ;)

and now i have just had to order aother one. :-[
i dropped it, and forgot to discharge the capacitor :-{
