Hi guys,

Since a lot of us are now harvesting LDs from working DVD drives, I'd just thought I'd share this. I used to be involved in R/C planes and nowadays the trend is to mod the brushless outrunner motors (harvested from CD/DVD drives) to power our planes :) So the next time you harvest a laser diode from the drive it might be worth posting your leftover brushless outrunner motor for sale on some R/C forum :)

Well, it depends on what kind of plane you want to make. But the most popular choice is Lipo batteries, as they last longer, they're lighter, and give you longer flight times.
 
most optical drives don't have the driverboard on the pcb for the motor - it would need a driver to make it work

That gets solved by buying an ESC, Electronic Speed Controller.

I'm so glad you posted this. I was thinking about this very thing this morning. You'll need a sensor-less speed control for a brushless motor.
How many R/C guys have laser head assemblies laying in their junk piles? 8-)
Don't forget all the optics and screws as well, I'll never need to buy small screws again. I've also noticed that old hard drives are basically just polished metal mirrors mounted on a brushless motor. Lots of possibilities there.
