I know little flashlight lingo, but I believe "throw" refers to how far the hot spot travels and is still useful and "flood" refers to the light that spills out the side to illuminate your surroundings.
The light spilling out of the sides indicates a dirty lens or that the beam is reflecting off of one of the lenses or the aperture.

Mode hopping is usually a problem that can't be fixed easily.
There is not a specific ideal temperature for all green lasers (assuming that is what you have here).
Usually it is a problem with getting enough power to the crystals (like an electrical problem) or it is a defect in the crystals themselves.
 
Had a green module that exhibited the bright "flood." 91% Isopropyl and cotton swab lightly, fixed it right up.

Mode hops are internal to the non-linear optics and their alignment. Probably just have to live with it.
 
ive never had a green laser mode hop before.... im usually pretty lucky :p
does it affect it in anyway?
 
Mode hopping is normal, especially for high power (like 400mW and up), ie large crystal lasers. Unless you get some really ugly mods, like 1:0 (double dot), there is no need for any worries. It's just how it's supposed to work.
