Melles Griot Laser Pumping Module 673nm on eBay






I've seen those come up before. Seems like a relatively pointless wavelength unless you were just one of the 'gotta catch em all' type people. No more 'red' appearing than 650, but even less visible, at least to me. 650, 780, and 808 all look like the same red to me, only it takes a crapload of power out of the latter two to be slightly visible. A lot more than you'd care to look at.

Those are some nice corrective prisms though. Might be useful for someone with a multimode 635 or something they'd like to tame.
 
Regardless of the wavlength, that's a NICE diode mount with some NICE anamorphic prisms! Those prisms are the reason that the diode can be used for pumping. This would be great for someone wanting to throw in an 808nm for some DPSS experimentation!
 
Hmm.. with that many leads... you think there might be a TEC in there as well?

*edit* nvm. the attached documents seem to point to no on my question. And judging from the back, looks like it uses the T/Q diode package.

I doubt it'd be much of a show. When stuff fluoresces, (except in very special circumstances) it radiates at a longer wavelength than the one it was excited with. Since it's being excited with 673, it's fluorescent wavelength is gong to be even closer to IR, if not actually being IR. Unless your observing with a spectroscope, you probably won't even be able to tell much is happening.

These are rated 500mW with a long life, come with corrective optics, and TEC..

An item like this from coherent brand new is a steal at 125. IMO.

Are you positive it's a Q (has TEC) package and not just a T (no TEC)? Both packages will have the same number of pins, and for manufacturing simplicity, I imagine would use the same harness.

I poked around google with the listed part number but couldn't find anything but the same datasheet that's posted saying it could be either one.

Im not 100% until I receive it, but its the LD and the prism pair that im interested in.

If there is no TEC, thats just as good.. I want to make an RGB platform with a 445nm
and DrLavas corrective optics. For the 532nm, im making another green labby from scratch.


The only thing I was really missing was a good red. Cant wait to see how this one pans out.
 
Ah. Only issue I see would be 673 having even less visible brightness per mw than other common reds. 650's and 660's. For a projector, I would have gone for the 500mw 635nm diode GB I saw on PL before. It would have been a heck of a lot brighter than 673, though you'd still have to contend with it's multimode output. But that can't be any worse than the 445's.
 
I also have a 1W 635 cmount, so depending on how this is pit together, LD's can always be switched out.

While 673nm may be a bit high, there shouldn't be much difference from the 660nm we are all used to, other than a deeper red similar to the 671nm DPSS units out there.

Besides, a "reliable 500mW" from coherent means this diode can take much more. Im sure the LD is probably rated for 1W, or at least im hopeful of that.

Im actually looking forward to a darker shade of red. One of my first red laser pointers back in the day was a 680nm, if its anything like that, im cool with it. :san:
 
Your lucky. Anything over 650 just looks like the same red to me. It just starts getting more dim per mw the higher it goes. The color for me quits changing. Even 650 and 808 look exactly the same shade of red for me. The 808 is just really dim.

Ill be sure to post some comparative beam shots of a 635, 660, and this 673 side by side. Maybe the cam will do some justice on the differences...
