Making this PS3 laser work

Hello,

I recently purchased couple of PS3 Blue ray KES-410ACA laser diodes
Wholesale Free shipping Laser Diode for PS3 KES 410ACA (3 pin) video game accessories
to make a laser pointer but I do not know the pin out of these diodes and their voltage-current ratings.

The closest match I think could be is this:

So is it right? I could not light it up. I gave i 29 mA at 4.5V but it does not light up. I used the same pin out. Does any one have a proper pin out or can tell me how to get this working? Most of the DIY PS3 laser diodes that I saw on the net are 5 pin diode not 3...
Please let me know. One pin is connected to casing (tested it with multimeter) and the other two end up in black holes...

Well I don't have much experience with PS3 diodes, but I do know they all have 5 pins, not just 3. I think you might have ben scammed.

All you have shown are blu-ray laser diodes, those could have ben extracted from any old blu-ray player, and the laser sled you showed said nothing about a 3 or 5 pin diode, and yes I know they PS3 comes in different types, and as for making it work, just do what I did when I used to make lasers from DVD burners, try every possible diode connection combination you can.
(If you have a good driver, reverse polarity will not be an issue.)

I can't see how they'd work as PS3 replacement diodes if they don't have the red diodes built in. Apart from missing pins, the pin spacing would be completely different too, and you'd only be able to read blu-ray disks.

Well I am not thinking of getting it into the PS3 but just make it work as a laser pointer. So how shall I light it up?

In reverse polarity will it not fry the diode away. Even 15mA higher than the rated current in the right polarity can damage the diode.

Genrally high power LEDs or normal LEDs can be lit up with a multimeter in continuity test mode and safely one can find out the right terminals. I am not able to do the same with a laser diode. In the sense for different combination of the terminals with continuity test mode I am not able to light the blu-ray diode up nor a working green laser diode that I have..

So what could possible be the terminals?
I am thinking of this combination:
1)The one to the case is NOT CONNECTED
2)One of the other two is a cathode and the anode (similar to the sony SL3131VF-data sheet in previous post)

Or The lead connected to the case is +ve and the other two which end up in black holes are both connected to -ve.

In either case voltage rating could be 4.5V to 5.8V and I is from 25mA to 35mA. I am expecting the power rating to be 15mW to 20mW.

The sellers claim this:
This KES-410ACA laser diode (4 Pin or 3 Pin) is new, it has not been touched.

It can be used for a phaser, laser pointer, or even PS3 repair if you are crafty

Those diodes will be about 15 or 20mW's at 38mA's. Anymore current and you will probably kill it. (blu-ray)

I also think the same but I do not know about the pin diagram of this blu-ray diode. Could you please post your pin connection (a picture showing the back of the diode with the legs labeled would be great). I will test it with a bench supply.

I did read the article earlier but it is for a 5 pin PS3. Mine is a 3 pin blu-ray.

I have seen the sony diode sld3131vf with the same config. Here is link from thorlabs which shows blue ray 405 nm in B ang G configs.http://www.thorlabs.com/NewGroupPage9.cfm?ObjectGroup_ID=7 I cam across a similar page for different configs in sam's laser FAQ but not able to find it now. It would have been great if these lasers lit up a bit with the multimeter in the continuity test mode.

So what could be the operating voltage?

In case of green lasers I have seen the casing to be +ve and the other two legs which end up in black holes to be connected to negative. Some of the driver designs in these pointers use a common Vcc connection rather than a common ground.

Yours is 3 pin?

Yes its a 3 pin blue ray diode.

It's going to be about 4.5 to 5 for the forward voltage...

Well I tested it yesterday with 4.5 Vf a I at 25-30mA dint get any output. It was not from a constant current driver so I guess it was not able to maintain the V-I required. I will test it with a bench supply today.
 
If you didn't get output, then it is probably dead.

These things are very sensitive to ESD. A spark from the tip of your finger can kill it...

I take enough care to touch a metal part before handling it. Non of the things I handled now died so. Just tested other diode and it is also not working. I still could not get my hands on a bench supply. I have handled many laser diodes (red and green) they all were fine as far as the ESD is concerned. I could not find quality ones locally.

Ok well I guess you probably also know that the driver can hold a voltage charge in the cap, that can kill the diode when you connect it...

Other than those two main things (that or ESD), it's not a complicated thing to do. It should be easy to light it up with about 35mA's. Maybe they got damaged during harvest?? Or were they loose diodes?

Either that or it is more powerful than the old PS3's, and does not even lase at 35mA's. Maybe it is more like a PHR??

But a PHR should begin lasing around 25mA's, and a 6X around 35mA's or so...

Didn't the company you bought them from have a data sheet of some kind for connection and current?

I ordered loose diodes and they did ship them so..I requested for a data sheet.The ebay listing for kipkay 20mw laser from aixiz also does not show any pin labeling and their laser drivers are also overrated.
