Hi, I'd like to buy a 5mW or less purple laser that's actually 5mW (or less). Reading these boards I see that most are way overpowered which is something I don't want.

Does anyone have any ideas where to get it? Reasonable prices are a bonus too (obviousely).

In case anyone is wondering why would I want it - my cat loves red lasers (goes crazy whenever I pick up the pointer) and I've read here that purple is supposed to be even better. But it has to be low power since I don't want to injure it's eyes.

Thanks!

You can put a filter in front of a laser to attenuate (drop power)
of the beam. You would still need a Laser Power Meter to know
what actual power you have.

The 5mW Lasers sold on eBay and from Chinese sites are usually
way over spec. The only real way to know what you have is
to meter your Laser...

You can buy from laserglow and they will meter the laser for you and you can buy them in low powers.

Their lasers are high quality though, and the price reflects that.

As laserbee said the only real way to know the power is to meter it, or buy a laser from someone who has metered it.

You can also build your own laser and set it to a low current that will give you a low power.

$200 is a bit much for a cat toy, that's for sure. I would just post in the BST for what you want, surely someone has one of those lasers that they bought and had it actually turned out low powered

It's pretty hard to get rare colors at a low power... the lowest power I have of a 405nm is like 50mW :p GL

Two things...

1. 405nm is not rare.
2. Rare wavelengths are often available ONLY in lower powers. 458nm, 473nm, 520nm, 561nm, 594nm, 604nm, 611nm... I could go on all day.

Well compared to 650nm and 532nm 405nm is more rare. 405nm diodes only came into existence in the 2000's anyway...

And if you are willing to pay the big bucks, you could probably get up to like 100mW of those wavelengths

You can check my signature for $7 blu-ray/405nm pointers, I measure each one and offer the printed LPM results with it. If you want a specific power range I can try to pick it out for you.

I have a 10mW 405nm pen. I just placed a Photographic
ND2 filter in front of it and I measured 5mW.

Hi, this is just what I wanted, ordered one already and placed the power reqs in the comments.

Oh, and do your green lasers come with IR filters?

The manufacturer advertises them as having filters but I don't know how much I would trust their word, I can test one tomorrow to see if any IR is coming out if that's important to you.

Hi, it's not that important right now, but after I get the purple one I may be buying a green one to (assuming they have IR filters). Like I said, it's going to be a cat toy so I don't want to risk her eyesight.

Fair enough, I will follow up with the results for you after I've had a chance to test them.

Thanks :)

ps
Does anyone else think companies selling vastly overpowered lasers is a bit danegerous?
