I'm looking for a diode to replace a HeNe in an interferometry setup. Doesn't need to be high power, just visible and coherent over a meter or so. By searching I found that people sometimes use CD burner diodes for this, but can anyone recommend a specific diode for this?

According the laser FAQ, any modern single mode diode has a long enough coherence length for you. Just pick one. Looks like you'd want to hold the temp constant, or at least leave it on for 30 minutes to allow the wavelength to stabilize before beginning your exposure.

If you need 'just visible', get the cheapest possible 1mW red pointer .. it might just as well work ..
