When I first showed that mod, you couldn't get pre-made Q5 lights for that cheap, but now you can buy the complete lights for $20 bucks...

But it is still a good mod if you just like to DIY! :)

The P7 light that ben74 linked is a much brighter emitter!

But you have to consider other things to your liking besides just brightness. Things like size of host, BULB LIFE, battery supply, run time, and of coarse brightness.

I still reach for the smaller hosts like the one I showed in the mod!

Here's a good light for the price/size/run time/brightness:

Glass lens, aluminum reflector, very small. Still very bright for the size...

thanks guys! I'm liking the P7 flashlight that ben74 linked. Hey ben do you think you could take a picture of yours lighting something up?

What is generally considered a bright flashlight when you hear the name?
I'll throw some random names out there.. xenon, wolf eyes, SSC, HID, Cree... although these names mean nothing to me.. i couldn't tell you the difference between any of them.

this is a BRIGHT light. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12623
xenon is a gas used in some light bulbs, wolf eyes is a good brand name for flash lights, SSC is a bright led with 4 dyes in like the one i linked to, HID is a different type of bulb that is more efficent then halogen but is big, Cree is a brand.

Sure i'll get a pic but it won't be great as my camera is not very good with flashlights.

You might want to check this out too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODQXoq_9lso  if you don't care about size.
wow, that sure is bright. unfortunately I was looking for something a tad bit smaller lol.

I'm hoping that whatever I find it'l have a beam at night

If you want BRIGHT. Go P7. The only thing that is going to be brighter in a SINGLE element (blub or emitter) is a HID bulb. There are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing a flashlight. Like a laser, a LED has a rated current. If the host you buy does not provide the desired current then your under driving the led and wasting it's power.

A P7 requires 2.4A to get the full lumens out of it. This and all single battery P7 flashlights arent' going to provide the current. I do have this flashlight here.

I will take some pictures tonight comparing to a normal cree Q5 at 120 lumens

This one takes 2 18650's and is going to come closer to providing the required 2.4A that the p7 needs.

I have seen a modified 4 D Maglight with 3 or 4 P7 emitters in one reflector and that thing was BRIIIGHT.

thank you kenom! So does that mean if i use a 18650 host and put 2x cr123a's in it, it should meet the full power?
If not, then maybe I will get a host that takes 2x 18650 to achieve that full power...but then I'm back at square one..which flashlight to get..

Hey man, you might want to ask your question at the flashlight enthusiast's forum instead: The Candlepower Forums!

Specifically, check out this thread: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=223240.  It is an amazingly comprehensive list of reviews of cheap -> moderately expensive flashlights from places like Dealextreme and Kaidomain.  Also, check out the marketplace, as many enthusiasts sell their DIY stuff there.

As for me, I bought the Romisen RC-F4 Q5 mod from Shiningbeam.com.  It's a 2 CR123 light for $24 shipped, and it's easily pocketable.  One of the best everday carry lights around. http://www.shiningbeam.com/servlet/the-55/Romisen-RC-dsh-F4-CREE-Q5/Detail  The regular RC-F4 P4 version on DX is only $14 shipped! But it looks like you'd rather pay a little more for better brightness. :p

i actually did check out CPF before posting this but all the different flashlight names and thread names confused me lol.
These graphs seem to help, however i dont understand what "throw" and "lightbox" are measuring. Is it better to have a larger or smaller number?
