Hello,

I've been a bit out from lasers and into flashlights. Now I'm back :)

Looking to aquire a blue 450 nm laser with power of at least 1w.
Price range is on maximum $140 usd shipped to me in Australia.


Are the fasttech TD-BP-120 450nm Blue Laser Pointer any good or just another Chinese overrated laser?

Or should I build my own? I'm good with soldering and building as I have modded a few flashlights.

I remember blord being one of the guys who manufacture good quality lasers. Is there any custom made for sale around this forum?

I did a quick search. Will do more tomorrow.
But do you think building my own would be cheaper? It's rewarding when I manage to build things on my own and work amazingly.
 
What are the parts i would need?

If i got the Osram PLTB450B 1.6W 450nm Diode In Copper Module W/Leads & Three Element Glass Lens $57.

I would need a host and a buck driver (1.8A X-drive), and thats it? besides battery which i already have.


I think i will have to build one, as my country has harsh laws on importing them.

You can get Osram PLTB450B 450nm Diode In Copper Module W/1.8A X-Drive & Three Element Glass Lens for $94 (shipped to Australia), you still have $46 to spend for a host. You can get a wf-501b host and heatsink for around $19. With these, you should be able to build a laser for $113

SO i could go
Option 1:
- Osram PLTB450B 1.6W 450nm Diode In Copper Module W/Leads & Three Element Glass Lens
- 1.8A X-drive
- Ultrafire WF-501B host
- Ultrafire WF-501B heatsink (12mm module and direct pressfit)

or

Option 2:
- Osram PLTB450B 450nm Diode In Copper Modules W/1.8A X-Drive &
405-G-2 Glass Lens
- Ultrafire WF-501B host
- Ultrafire WF-501B heatsink (12mm module and direct pressfit)

And I'm done? Just add batteries?


Also is the G2 lens worth the extra compared to the 3 element lens?
The host already comes with the tail click switch?

Also ill need a goggle for protection. Any recommendation?

G2 lens will produce a higher output than 3 element lens but 3 element lens will produce a cleanner beam spot. I would not recommend you buy g2 lens.

I think you should build one so there's no risk of loosing it to customs. I built one of these late last year and it does 1913mW with a G2 lens. It has a thin beam that's better than the 445's so it has a high power density. I took about 50 photos but I still haven't got around to posting a build thread yet, sorry. The parts cost me a total of exactly $140 but shipped to Australia I guess would be more. It's worth it, I think you're making a good choice. I used a Mrcrouse plug and burn host pre-wired with a battery contact board that is almost the same as a 501B host that I think he still sells for $20 + shipping. You may want to check with him:

I also used an extended focus ring, external lens spring, and lens cap from Survival Laser. Those aren't required though. Here are my photos I am planning on posting in a build thread/tutorial if you want to see what I did:

Yes that's correct, you can buy a DTR module with driver and just solder together 2 pairs of wires and screw some parts together and you're done.

That's too easy!

I think i will go with that for my first custom build. There is someone here trying to sell me a custom host. It looks nice. But i think it will pass my budget.

How is this for a setup? Since I need to get a glasses for safety, Imight as well get a nice stainless steel host from them (survival laser) so that I get free shipping internationally for orders over $100.

I like that host very much, be sure to spend the extra $1 for the drilled pill or you will regret it. Another option is to buy the DTR module without the driver and get this one at 1.8A instead: Survival Laser Driver either way won't matter, be aware there's slightly more assembly required and it's not as idiot proof as the other host.

What is the "drilled pill" option? I've seen but didn't know what it was. Is it just holed for wire to pass through?

Also why is the 1.8A driver from Survival laser better?
