Looking for 405nm >750mW For use in Marine Aquaria

Thus far, I've been using a 1800mW / 445nm laser for testing with very good results. It's been suggested that a 405nm laser may be better suited for our use namely, the underwater eradication of invasive corals and pests in a marine environment (more information here and here)

I'm looking to purchase a laser (or if I understand the FDA restrictions correctly, purchase the components to assemble a laser) with the following specs,

  • 405nm with an output of at least 750mW
  • Optimal quality components and len(s) to provide for longest duty cycles
  • High quality, and ideally waterproof host (is this possible?)
As this is being used to test the effectiveness with the marine trade, I'm looking for the highest power output and best overall quality available.

In my brief time reading through these forums, it's apparent there are many highly skilled persons doing simply amazing work. If testing is successful, I will directly promote the supplier/builder hopefully resulting in significant future sales.

I'm sure there is information I've left out as I'm just going through the laser "learning curve" please feel free to post any/all comments or suggestions and offers to build with recommended specifications, costs and time to delivery.

With the 3-element lens included, it hits either 600mW using 2x14500s or 800mW using 3x14250 and magnetic spacers. If you add a G1, it gets up into the 900 to 950 range.

When I initially thought to be only capable of 600mW, I listed it for sale at $180. I pulled the listing when I realized that it could hit 800mW with three-cells, and 900mW + if you add a G1 lens.

I would sell it for $225 with a 3-element, if interested. It is NOT waterproof. It also is running pretty close to the maximum edge of what that diode is capable of. So as I have said upfront with previous 800+ mW 405 sales, the "warranty" (if you call it that) I would offer is limited to an offer to replace the diode, if it dies, at cost (real cost, not inflated cost - just whatever a diode costs, I'll put it in for that, in the event of a diode death)

Though I have not delt directly with RHD yet, I can tell you since he came to this Forum, he is one of the biggest contributers and most trusted members here, so his builds will be as stated.

My 405nm at 750mw will burn and cut faster than my 1500mw 445nm.

I don't have my tanks set up anymore to test, but I think you will find the 405 will burn faster, thus cutting down on the potential release of unwanted issues in frying some of those nasty critters.

So at half the power of your 1.8 445, you also gane the less chance of any damage to you or others from reflections, etc.

Make sure you post your results after you try one.
