It is more complicated than that. A direct diode yellow has been in development for decades, but these lasers have still been available as DPSS, OPSS, etc. I suspect that a 589nm direct diode that can operate at room temperature will be developed eventually, but knowing the exact day that it occurs is still too far away.

This article is very bad and not even mentions the wavelength. If you look the mentioned publication up:

The have made 565nm laser diodes in their lab. If this can be considered yellow or green is something I don't know.
