Hey all!

Does anyone know something about the legal situation in Austria (not Autralia)?
I was wondering if its legal to use Class 4 Lasers on a private property,
or if theres some license needed.

Greetings

LASER laws in Austria (Austrian LASER Laws)

Hey all! Does anyone know something about the legal situation in Austria (not Australia)? I was wondering if its legal to use Class 4 Lasers on a private property, or if theres some license needed.

Hi there, :) seems the Classes 3R 3B, 4 were regulated under EU laws according to this Austrian scientific paper : HERE

The EU Commission had requested Austria to comply with EU laws on lasers in 2010 : HERE

Austrian Law prohibited ownership of powerful lasers unless approved by the authorities in 2011 : HERE

In fact, Austria already had a 1998 law against laser weapons that can blind : HERE

Also applies to : GERMANY

And : NORWAY

Hope that helps! :tinfoil:

Thank you for all the information!

I read through the papers, but i don't think they apply to me,
since they regulate
1. products :
  • to be placed on the market - I only want to by components and assemble them myself
  • for professional use - I want to use the laser for a CNC Cutter in my private workshop
  • for laser/light shows - Which is also not the purpose
2. weapons designed to blind - Blind someone is the last thing i want it to do

Personal use falls under entertainment uses. I believe all of Europe, and most of the world in fact, don't permit public use of any laser 1mW or over, the USA is one exception allowing up to 4.9mW. As long as you don't use it in a way it affects the public it's readily ok in theory.

It sounds to me you will be using it inside in your own house or shop so unless the AHJ can come into
your place of residence without a warrant I believe you will be safe from prosecution :tinfoil:

AHJ= Authority Having Jurisdiction

Ok thank you all for your informations and thoughts!

@Flaminpyro: Yes, its just at home, with curtains closed ;-)
