I have looked all over the internet and i know it is illegal to import laser pointers over 1mW, but it doesn't say anywhere if you are or aren't allowed to posses a laser over 1mW. I am probably getting a category A firearms license within a month (it's been 5 months since my dad put in the application and it takes a max of six months), if that helps somehow. Serious answers plz
Thank You

You can't have a laser pointer (hand held) outputting over 1mW in Australia full stop..
That being said I think I read somewhere many moons ago about being able to get a permit if you're part of a star gazing group but even
then you can only have around 35mW or something a long those lines..

However you can purchase lab lasers and modules..ect without any problems at all and go about building your own

Cool, thanks  I am building one at the moment (waiting for parts) and wondering if it was illegal to posses a laser.

The last part of "Laser Pointers - NSW Police Online" it says if u purchased a laser before the ban started and if u wanted to keep the laser after the ban, you had to get a firearms license. I'll get the government fire arms email address and ask them. Thanks guys

It's not a ban, but a restriction. The website indicates you still require a license to keep the laser even if it was purchased before the additional
bill dated back to 2009.

You'll probably find yourself in the " Yes you can have one.. But!"

From my understanding you need to be apart of a gun club that has a supporting range for the firearm you own, Followed by a valid reason for having one.
Also I'm 99.9% sure Australia or anywhere else for that fact doesn't have a "Laser pointer range"

We have the same problem with Airsoft guns here in Australia.. You can legally own one with a license but no where actually supports them.

This brings a new meaning to shooting for the stars.... heh..

Here is the info directly from police.nsw

Laser Pointers

Laser pointers are hand held, battery operated devices designed or adapted to emit a laser beam that may be used for the purposes of aiming, targeting or pointing. In recent times, some members of the public have acted irresponsibly by directing the laser beam into the cabins of motor vehicles and the cockpits of aircraft. This reckless practice can blind drivers and pilots and has the potential to cause significant loss of life.

To put a stop to such behaviour, the Government has made it an offence for anyone to have a laser pointer in their custody in a public place or to use a laser pointer in a public place without a reasonable excuse. If a police officer has reasonable grounds for suspecting that you are in possession of a laser pointer in a public place, they may search you, confiscate the laser and commence legal action.

The NSW Police Force understands that people use laser pointers for legitimate purposes and that some people need to carry their laser pointers around with them. For example, some teachers and builders use laser pointers in their jobs and need to carry them to and from their workplaces. Low powered laser pointers will continue to be available for such uses. Other people carry lasers to pursue hobbies such as astronomy. Rest assured that if you have a reasonable excuse for carrying your laser, then there will not be a problem.

New legislation also restricts who can possess and/or use laser pointers with a power level of greater than one milliwatt. From 18 July 2008 you will require a permit to possess or use such a laser pointer, unless an exemption applies to you. To apply for a permit, you will need to contact the Firearms Registry on 1300 362 562 or visit www.police.nsw.gov.au/community_issues/firearms/prohibited_weapon_permits. Permits will only be issued to applicants who have a genuine reason for having such a device. For example, that the laser pointer is required for the type of business/employment in which you are engaged.

Note that you will not need to obtain a permit to possess/use a laser pointer with a power level greater than one milliwatt if you are a member of an approved astronomical organisation.

Also be aware that if you obtained the laser pointer before 18 July 2008, you will not need to obtain a permit until 1 December 2008. Thereafter, if you wish to retain your laser pointer, you will need to obtain a permit through the Firearms Registry.

I am soon to have a firearms license, well my dad actually. He put one in about 5 months ago and it takes 6 months max to get it back. We have 24 acres but you need 40 for a gun license so my dad got one of his mates that has 60 acres to sign a form saying we can shoot at his place.

It's unfortunate that Australia has such nanny laws. Ban this, ban that..
never solves the problem.
We have very strict firearms laws here in Canada, however it doesn't stop
people from shooting one another over drugs and gang rivalry.

Good to hear you shoot. I do too. :san:

Nice, we are going to get a slug gun and .22 to play around with and a 3030 or 308 to use at the mates place. Once we get into it more, we'll get more guns. I have found my state police email and sent them one. Tell you how it goes soon :)

Australia is a sucky place when it comes to laws and regulations..

One of the problems with banning everything that's dangerous is that people go out and try and build/do it themselves, Most of the time fully uneducated resulting in injury's and such..

That's why they need better classes and licensing in place.. You'd probably find if you had an actual course you could go do for obtaining a laser and getting a hold of the correct license you would have less idiots pointing them at helicopters and so on.

Best of luck with getting your firearms license though!

I would guess that you father having a firearms license does not convey/give a license to you to do anything with a firearm--same would be the case with a laser over 1mw --is this not so or do they issue a family license that would include you name on the license as well?

Had mine for 10 years now. I am a member of the
military arms group. Restricted Class.
Mostly ex-military or active duty cops in our group.

Thanks  and i am aware of what lasers can do. I know to ALWAYS wear glasses for the certain nm when operating lasers over 5mW and to never shine it at pilots (i dont even point it in the sky). I have basic laser building knowledge as well. I agree with you Lazy Laser, we should have courses and things like that. Thanks guys. :)
