Lasers In NSW?? (Aus)

Thanks mate, How do i contact Susie? And what laser power should i get? Is there an average power that Is the best value for money?

What's your budget?

Naturally the more powerful the laser is the brighter it will appear, but if don't care about burning things and just want to be able to "see" the beam in the dark or at night, then 50mW would be good for you.

Their 150mW module will average at 120-130mW and that might light a still black match, cut black tape, pop black or red baloons... ect. But I've read that the beam divergance isn't too good at 1.6mRad

Divergence is a measure of how rapidly the beam expands as it travels. So if it travels 1000 meters the dot will then be 1.6 meters across. But you can notice the beam start to widen even after 10ft or so.

Oh ok thanks mate. Id probably say my budget is $50-$75.

I was just looking on o-like. What are your thoughts on the 200mW red laser thats around $45? Is it worth getting this or should i spend a little more (happy to go a little over budget) and get say, a green one?

Ask yourself; Do I want to see the beam or do I want to burn stuff?

If you want to burn, get that 200mW red.
If you want to see the beam, get at least 50mW of green.
.
.
.
And if you want both... well get the most powerful green you can afford.

BTW, this is a great 50mW green laser pointer. I've bought two and both are over 50mW and you can easily see the beam in the dark and outside at night. But I don't know if they can guarantee a successful import. But it's cheap.

Well to be able to "burn" in general (light matches, pop baloons, cut tape...ect.) You'll need about 130mW AND a small beam diameter.

But if your budget is only 75 bucks... I don't think you're gonna find anything like that.

This module would be good but just the module is a hundred bucks, then you'll need a host.
Green laser module 150mW For custom build or lab [OLGLM150] - $96.99 : Welcome to O-Like.com, Your source for laser products

The best deals on lasers you'll find, are on this forum. Take a look at the Buy Sell Trade section. Green lasers pop up all the time.

You might have to settle for less.

Ok thanks mate, Im thinking that il just get the red 200mW for now. That looks alright for the price, what are your thoughts on this one?

It's a great deal if it truly is 200mW. But since the human eye isn't very sensitive to red light the "beam" won't be too visible without smoke.

I've got a red 250mW laser and my 50mW green "appears" to be brighter.

But it should burn stuff pretty easily. Also understand the the mW is only half of the requirement when it comes to burning stuff. It also depends on the beam diameter.

1-2mm is great
3-4mm is ok
+4mm meh (you'll need a magnifying lens)

By using a jewelers loupe you can focus the dot to a very small size (like the head of a pin) and then it will torch anything.

Oh and by the way. How much would i be looking at spending for a 130mW+ Green laser?

That laser is focusable, you'll be able to make the beam focus down to a point for burning or leave it focused to infinity for pointing. You won't need the loupe.

A 130mW green laser will cost you upwards of $130.

You get what you pay for.

A quality green laser, bought from a reputable and reliable site will be around 3 bucks a mW.

A cheaper green laser would be 1-2 bucks a mW

It's hard to say exactly what you should expect to pay for powerful green lasers. It depends on so many things. My best advice is to not buy a "pen" style green laser if it is over 120mW. Typically they do not last, they go through batteries like crazy, they get too hot, and they have a shor duty cycle (how long they can be left on safely, before they need to cool). So you should try and fine a "lab" style handheld laser. The best ones are made by a company called CNI.

They make the Aries series lasers from Laser Glow.
http://www.laserglow.com/GAR#
And the Alpha series from Nova Lasers
Alpha HP 150 Handheld Laser - Alpha HP Series - Novalasers Inc.

Those are quality lasers and they are very stable. Lower quality lasers like the ones from Rayfoss and DealExtreme are cheap and modified to make more power. The lasers diodes are pushed to the max and the crystal lenses are not rated for that kind of power and the overheat and burn out.

Just save up and buy something worth having.
