Laser power for longer distances?

I want to build a laser that doesn't have to burn anything but I want it to go FAR, what would different power ranges reach in terms of distance?

No matter the wavelength or power, laser light travels "forever" until it either hits something or the beam is so wide you can't even notice it anymore. Your best bet is a 532 green as it's the brightest, and in turn the one you'll be able to notice for a longer distance.

Is there a specific purpose for wanting to build one only for distance? :)

Thanks, i'll look into Green lasers.

Mainly because I am looking to try out an effect with photography. In short, it's a form of lightpainting but using a laser. I'm sure its been done before but probably not how I am going to do it :)

Also, to save me some time doing DIY, do you think this would be of ok quality? http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Adjustable-F...501?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item3a9cadc6dd

Neat, I look forward to your pictures!

That would work fine, although if you plan on keeping your green laser for awhile I would recommend upgrading to a more expensive, better built laser(which we have links to companies who sell those in the "General" section).

Research beam expanders. They make for better divergance for longer distance

A major factor is how much you want to spend because generally, more powerful lasers cost more.
Other things to consider are WL as green is the most visible to the human eye.
Also beam width and beam divergence come into play.
