Laser ignition in cars

Slashdot just published this article in today's digest: apparrently, Ford and GSI are looking to lasers as an alternative to spark plugs. The article, as well as the references, remain vague on the technical bits, understandably, but what I read indicates they will be using NIR, and possibly diode-in-a-plug, or fiber optics, which is more difficult for now.
