Laser housing trouble

Hey everyone!

I've searched all over and I'm at my wits end. I ordered some of these intending to use them with various salvaged diodes from optical drives.

I'd read up on diode install and I was all set to press fit, but when the housings arrived they looked like the first attached picture.

Uh, threading? So I measured my diode and its flange was 5.59mm on the calipers and it slides freely just on the inside of the threads. Well, that's not going to work.

I sent a message to the seller and they responded with a terse message indicating it might be a problem with tolerances. They gladly shipped replacements to me at no cost. I wasn't convinced they understood the problem, so I made a youtube video showing the problem (it had personal info so I haven't linked it here) and included this picture I found elsewhere on the net (second attached picture).

I just received my replacement front ends, and they are identical to the first.

My question is this: Am I missing something or is that brass element simply necessary?

I sent another email with pictures embedded in the hopes it will make sense to the seller this time. I suspect they haven't taken the time to listen to the problem, but I don't want to go off on them if it's my fault for ordering the wrong thing.

Sounds to me like you don't know how a simple diode mount works? You put the diode in, then screw the retaining ring in after it, which holds the diode in place. I am surprised that aixiz shipped you free replacements, when there is nothing wrong with what you got. Why would you not use everything that was included, then assume something was wrong with the part? That's like buying a TV, not using the power cord, and then wondering why it doesn't work...

Maybe I should have been more clear. There were no retaining rings included and I couldn't find evidence online anywhere of retaining rings being used or even sold. All the info I've seen describes press fitting.

There most certainly is something wrong with what I got. If you're correct and I'd have known better at the time I would simply have said that the set I ordered was missing retaining rings.

I didn't request replacements, they were shipped to me on the seller's assumption after I'd provided clear evidence of my problem. In my opening email I actually suggested that it seemed the unit was designed to be used with a retaining ring and that none was supplied.

I expected that the seller would be able to recognize the problem when supplied with photos and video of the issue.

You're right, that would be stupid, but it bears no resemblance to what I did.

Ah,yes, you should have made it clear you did not receive the retaining rings- the second picture you posted clearly shows said ring, so I assumed you had them. What does the inside of the back part of the module look like, by the way?
