hello everyone,

i'm new to the laser experience and i want to buy my first laser.
at first i was planned to buy a laser from laserpointerpro.com but after reading a few dissapointing threads here i thought it was best to ask some people who know their lasers.
i would like a green laser the most because of the visability.
i don't really know how visible/strong the power output is from lasers, by which i mean i don't really know what a 100 mw green laser does, does it burn matches, plastic, how visible is it...

i've seen this laser, but like i said i don't know if it's any good.
i want to spend around 50-60 $
could someone help me to find a laser wich is good price-quality for a beginner?

thanks in advance

Hello welcome, i would advice you as a beginner buying first laser buy something like 20-50mW, even those in dark are very visible even pointing in sky etc. For burning you need like 100mW and also safey glasses so you dont damage your eyes.

I would recommend you buy from laserbtb.com as their lasers have nice safety features and good quality and cheap prices.

And check out this video to give you an idea how certain mW lasers beams look like,

^As mortuus mentioned, safety glasses are a MUST for a 50mW laser. These are some great glasses, and highly recommend around the forum: Eagle Pair® 190-540nm Standard Laser Safety Goggles

so i indeed might have enough (for now) with a focusable 50mw laser.
i've been looking on the site of laserbtb.com and i've seen that it's a chinees one. i was just wandering if this site was reliable because i've seen in other threads users didn't like those chinees sites.

how can i know what i order is really what i'm going to get, i mean how do i know the 50mw laser will be really a 50mw ?

Yes, laserbtb.com is 100% safe, and most of their lasers are slitghly over-spec. If you check out Livinloud's thread:http://laserpointerforums.com/f44/complete-guide-owning-lasers-please-read-82066.html laserbtb is even listed as a trusted company :)

If you would like to know the output of the laser you will be receiving, just ask a representative at laserbtb and they will provide a power graph.

if his budget is $50-60 then I don't think he is going to get $45 safety glasses too. If he gets the IR filter installed then pair of $5 ebay glasses would be ok for a 100mw green. If and when he decides to move on to more powerful lasers he should invest in better safety glasses.

well, indeed this is kind of a struggle point for, the safety glasses.
because i have quiet a tight budget i can't afford such expensive goggles.
on the other hand i do care ( a lot ) about safety.
the main thing i want to do with the laser is point out stars, but i would also like (ofcourse) to be able to burn thing with the laser, even if it's just to show some people.
that's why i'm really considering buying a 50mw focusable laser.
just one thing i still don't get. why do lasers with the same output power can be so different in price, even on the same site.

what do you guys think would be best for me, spend a little more on my first laser so i can enjoy it longer or buy a cheaper, less powerful one?

you could go with the joker. SFCG-100 532nm Green he is a member here and his lasers are high quality. They sell out so fast. This laser is in a really cool host and it is quite heavy duty feeling. it is still more fragile as it is dpss green though. all of his lasers come power tested and you get the power graph for free. he also has great shipping times. it is not IR filtered but it leaks a very small amount of IR like 14mW on average. If you want to go cheap go fasttech I've had this for months and it is still fine it is also between 50 and 80mw

Up to 100mW glasses are not needed, unless you plan to burn stuff...

And I wouldn't care about the IR, green light is dangerous too... a few mW more from IR won't matter a lot, as you would still burn your retina with just the green light...

The best safety is intelligence and reason...

The main problem with IR is that people do not realize it is a component of the lasers so even if they were to get safety glasses they would think that they are protected which is true for the green portion but if the beam is hitting the glasses then the IR component is going through them straight into their eye and they will not know till it is too late.

Ya and don't do what I did, buying a 500mw 405nm violet laser without glasses lmao I've stopped using it because of that until I get glasses

In order to work with in his budget the only goggles he can afford would be the cheap ones which would work fine if his laser is IR filtered and/or if he uses it responsibly. what if he ends up not liking lasers, and is then left with useless $45 glasses

Well, what i want in my laser is that it has a nice clean beam.
So i've looked at the website of fasttech and indeed their lasers are very cheap but i as i've looked at a few lasers i've seen they didn't have the nice clean beam. So i would rather buy a 50 mw laser with a clean beam than a bad 200mw.
At laserbtb i've seen you can get it ir filtered, but i was wondering if they output power was ir included or is the output power just the green beam ?

All their lasers are tested with IR filter so you get what you pay for and nice clean beams for sure

Great then i probably will get one from laserbtb. Thanks guys you've been of great help for me :-)
