It's cool, but he may want to read up on a few things.

Safety goggles
The fact that it's not heat energy it's light energy.
Not to shine burning lasers in/towards your camera.

Hold on ... that could work, but you couldn't have it set from the valves, you would need to have a circuit that recognises the frequency of an A, and then switches the laser on from there.
