Kershaw Blur S30V for $80, any better recommendations?

So, I think I'm picking up a Blur in S30V, unless anyone else has a better idea in the price range (ie BELOW this price, I'm already pushing it). It seems to be among the highest quality assisted openers available, and the steel is basically the best in this price range as well. Aluminum grips are a major plus, I want this thing to be sturdy. Anyone know of a better knife similar to this one, or should I go ahead and stick with this?
 





I was gonna get the "tactical" tanto version for the slightly better steel than the regular version at the same price, but the look drove me off. (And I've realized that tanto sucks if you ever hope to sharpen the knife.) I like the look of the standard version the most, but the 440a steel SUCKS. So I think this more expensive version with the slightly less attractive (IMO) but much better quality steel will be a good compromise.
 
Kershaw is probably my favorite <$100 knife company. I have the Breakout auto ($75 for black, $67 for normal silver), which uses Sandvik 14C28N steel, and it's great. It does have aluminum grip, but the entire thing is really slim. If you need a knife for heavy use I wouldn't recommend it, but it's my favorite EDC.

That breakout auto looks really nice, but I am looking for something for "heavy use", ie a thicker blade and better steel. My last knife didn't hold up well, hence the need for better steel.

14C28N is a good steel. But yeah the Blur would definitely be better for you. Just curious what was that other steel, and how did it not 'hold up'?

My old knife was 440a, and it had awful edge retention. It got little knicks in it pretty easily and didn't stay sharp (although to be fair, I'm not a good sharpener or anything-but it dulled fast!) Not to mention it wasn't that great of a knife all around, either. I'm just stepping it up a little here, plus kershaw has a lifetime warranty so this thing will probably last me a while.
 
I didn't know the warranty was lifetime! That's great. And I see what you mean, 440/420 is pretty terrible, though about as stainless as you can get.
 
Yeah, I thought the warranty was great for the price. They'll even sharpen the knife for free, you just ship it to them! That's one of my favorite parts... professional sharpening can be expensive.
 
Have you ever used a system like the Spyderco Sharpmaker? They completely sharpen the knife, and all you really need to do is hold the knife straight up and down. I've never actually had a blade professionally sharpened, but I've never needed to.
 
Nope, never tried that, but I don't like sharpening things with what I have. I never feel like I'm back to that "factory" edge.
 
Practice makes perfect! I'm just thinking all of the shipping costs would start to add up sending it in repeatedly.
 
That's a good point... I forgot we were talking S30V. Anyway, do a review or let us know how it is whenever you get it!
