Just pruchased 450nm 1 Watt blue laser pointer.. battery question

Hello all,

I just purchased a 1 watt 450nm laser pointer off ebay, i didn't realize until after i already hit the buy button that this particular kit did not include a charger or batteries, it says it takes 2 16340 batteries but i don't really want to spend anymore money i have a 18650 from a 301 that recently died on me size wise it should fit no problem the one i have has a higher mah as well so should last longer, is there any compatibility issues i should be concerned with or are these pretty much interchangeable?

That 18650 would most likely fit but its only 3.7v to 4.2v and as your new laser is rated to use 2 16340 at the same voltage each your laser would be way under powered.

What is the voltage requirement of the laser?
If it takes 2 of those batteries I am pretty sure the requirement is ~7.4 volts.
Usually one 18650 battery is just 3.7 volts. Therefore your laser will only be getting half the required voltage.

Simply check the required voltage of your laser and then the output of your 18650 battery. To be safe, you should use the recommended batteries. It's not like they are a $300 item.

No, you do need two batteries for this laser. Here's an eBay link to where you can buy two and get them in the U.S. Quickly, but you can buy one battery for $0.75 and get it in a couple weeks.

I already found a set of 4 and a charger on Amazon that gets good ratings that's about 16 bucks not sure about shipping.

Not entirely sure but more than likely i will need both dang it, i just thought i was getting a deal.

If you didnt order yet go to this sight Tmart.com and look for their US Warehouse products, they will ship very quick compared to the ones that ship from their china based warehouse...again remember that they are probably trustfire batteries but will get you started.

be careful tho 1w is too powerful to use without goggles u can look at the beam but its not recommended.

I know i already have goggles from when i had the green one before that covers this range the only time i plan on using it without them is outdoors in a open area. The eagle orange pair i believe they are rated for 200-540.

It is one that I have seen many reviews on. Will it damage the laser if I use an 18650 but it was advertised as being used for two 16340s? These two lines were copied from the listing:

• Power supply: 2 x 16340 Battery
• Working voltage: DC 3.0-3.7V

It does say other things but these are the things that make me think there is a conflicting statement in that listing. The reason being is that if it was 2 16340s the working voltage would be 7.4 (or 8.4 for fully charged batteries). One 18650 would be 4.2 volts at the most even though sold as 3.7. If using an 18650 will not damage the laser, I might try that instead. That would help me avoid having to balance cells when you consider the possible danger of using unbalanced cells.

An 18650 can't provide enough voltage to operate the laser at full power. You'll get <100mW if you use an 18650 instead of 16340s.

Thanks, I just was not sure about that. The laser has not arrived in the mail just yet and I was looking to see if I should get the 16340s the next time I am out. I know a place that sells mostly specialty batteries and has a few flashlights. The people in there are friendly and knowledgeable and the prices seem good. They are not the lowest prices but they are not selling Ultrafire batteries or similar batteries of questionable quality. The name of the store is Battery Giant, it is a chain of stores really. It is where I got my Efest LUC v2 battery charger.

I just made that question much easier since it came in today. An 18650 does not fit, it is too big. I will need to get 16340s. I will get them the day my safety glasses come in this way I will not have the batteries for the laser without them.
