Just a few laser safety questions

I have bought the Arctic S3, because I loved the host, and etc.

Please do not flame that.


However, I have some concerns.

1. Is it possible to not wear the safety glasses while using it on certain lens? I have the extended lens kit.

2. When can I use it without glasses?

3. How low does the training lens make the output?

WL CS is clueless. Take anything from WL with a very large grain of salt.

If you're just pointing at stars, outside, it's fine. Just be super careful not to hit any planes, or shine the laser anywhere near them... very bad, very illegal thing to do.

How about when I am stargazing?

If you can be sure that there is nothing that can cause specular reflections in the vicinity of the beam the laser won't roll and accidentally shine onto something reflective and the surface the beam is shining on is matte (or better yet use a beamdump) then in certain circumstances it is permissible to view the beam without safety goggles on. But there are loads of precautions to take before you do so.

Here's a simple analogy for you.

Using a laser = driving a car
Wearing safety glasses = wearing a seatbelt

If you're inclined to believe WL CS over LPF, then whatever floats your boat dude.

Basically you have to make judgement calls. As a general rule, outdoors beam shots are often done carefully without goggles. Accidents can still happen, but you have to use care.

Outdoor, nighttime beam shots are kind of pointless with goggles.

Wattage is also a factor. >500mW gets VERY dangerous in an accident.
