A 19 year old guy in Ajax ON. just outside Toronto has been arrested for being an idiot! He was caught green handed with a DX (looking) 532nm pen, pointing at a Durham PD helicopter.

The Durham Police have now stated that they are calling for a ban on 3b handhelds. And that there are at least 1 report of aircraft being hit per week out of Pearson International.

Time for me to move to Quebec...

The laws seem to be stiff here already, its stated that he faces 4-5 charges, 5 years in prison / or $100,000.00 fine (US or Canada funds...same thing)

LOL, good point! IIRC the guy in Regina or the likes ended up paying 1,500. and probation. It wasnt Ontario, but the laws would be federal no? So probably the same outcome or they will make an example..

I saw the same story on another news channel and the term 'ban' keeps rearing its ugly head.

Well I guess it is pretty much inevitable that 3b lasers will be banned in Canada at some point, since most countries now have some sort of new legislation against them. Still sucks whenever I hear a story about some idiot who brings us closer to having them banned though. I can't say that I am fully against a ban either, there are many people who REALLY should not be allowed to own high power lasers. It's not really attacks on planes that concern me either, I just don't want to be blinded by some dumb kid while I am walking along the street. I would be happy to see a licensing system implemented for high power lasers that would allow people to go through a licensing process. This would allow us responsible laser users to freely buy and sell 3b and 4 lasers. While it would prohibit the general population from owning them without going through a laser safety test and course.

With the availability and DIY community, I just cant see a ban doing much.

If they make an example of one guy and give him the actual 'max', would most likely not stop any of this activity.

I can still see this being a problem, ban or no ban.

One of the pilots interviewed in a news clip said 'it used to be red lasers, and now green which are much brighter and more dangerous.'

Little do they realize the difference between a 5mW red being not so bright and a 3-400mW DIY.

For distraction value the green takes the cake, but DIY reds are on average more mW and pose a bigger danger.

Lets not forget a class 4 bluray.. The penalties are going to get ridiculous in the near future as the risk becomes greater...


Maybe just give the offenders the chair

I hope this idiot doesn't ruin it for the rest of us Canadians. If I saw someone pointing an laser at a plane, I would point my laser at them. Now that lasers and the dangers to aircraft's has made Canadian news, they will impose a ban any time soon.

If I saw someone pointing an laser at a plane, I would point my laser at them.

I've always been a LITTLE bit tempted to bring a 100mW 532 with me in the cockpit but.... ....no. Won't go there.

the only thing i still dont under stand is, if the windows + cockpit are on the top half of the plane, and the kid was underneath, how could it get into the pilot's eyes?

it was stupid indeed, but it seems like they are over-exadurating what actually happened.

Police Helicopters have see through bottom shells... and at Airports
(like Pearson) the planes are on Final approach or Takeoff... are close
to the ground...
I can easily see the cockpit window of a plane taking off or landing...

Err.., you can see the ground from a plane, silvercookie. It's not like you only have a sky-up view.

You do get that, right? If I'm at say, 7000ft AGL, and I look down, I can see cities, airports, buildings... I don't even really have to be in a banked turn.

So therefore, if I can see something on the ground, someone standing on the ground in that spot, can hit me with a laser, in my plane. In the face.

As Lasersbee said, it's pretty easy to see cockpit windows. If pilots could never see the ground, then planes would be pretty difficult to operate.

Right now Caravan 675 and C182s. And if there's a need, Mirage. I've said before -- any LPF guys in Colorado<->Wyoming, I'll take you up. Not a problem. We could go for a 400-mile hamburger. Unfortunately due to FAA regs, if there was beer involved, I couldn't parttake.

See, I actually prefer FDA-rated hosts. Very little chance of an "Oops, I just shot my eye by bumping the button and having the beam reflect off of something in my room."

I know some folks think the delay and interlocks are a pain, but are we really that impatient?

Course, FDA interlocks won't stop a douchebag from being a douchebag.
