Its a dud, is there any way to tell?

Dud received from O-Like - Power Rock 1W 445nm. It's very underpowered.

Here are some pictures of it. Is there any way to tell it's a dud. Also I'm hoping to replace this piece – any recommendation of where to go and how to tell which diode and circuit would best fit my host?

Well it's a bit hard to tell visually, especially with blurry pics and the thing half covered in potting compound.. O-Like are usually pretty good, what is/was it? (wavelength power etc). Also how do you know its underpowered?

Did you check the batteries were charged, in the correct way etc first? Have you hooked the driver & diode up to a DC supply and checked it? Have you asked them about returning it?

I have seen pots move and switches die on cheaper laser drivers, although I wouldn't touch the pots without test gear or you could fry the diode.

AFAIK, nope.

Perhaps the driver is simply set too low (recycles from 405nm maybe),

Try measuring what sort of current does it pull from the fully charged battery.

It should pull out in excess of at least 1.5 Amps or so.

That looks awfully small for 1 watt....

I have checked with three seperate Ultrafire batteries and everything. I do not have a DC supply I could hook it up to unfortunately.

As far as returning it, it's past that point and they were kind of shady about it. I wouldn't do business with O-Like again.

If you want to tinker.... there are 2 pots on the PCB.
One on each side of the PCB. A pot is a variable resistor.

They are the silvery round things with the [ + ] in them.

As you must already know... Pot modding is not
recommended by the majority of the Forum community.

There may possibly be another problem associated with
your Laser/Driver.
