Is the "UV Handheld Laser Engraving Kit" legit?

True, although my tests with LEDs have shown that 365nm UV tends to work slightly better than 405nm. But my plan was to use 405nm. Remember, I stumbled on the above set by CHANCE.

Do you need a laser for this though? Maybe you can use an LED with a UV output that is quite a bit cheaper (but still expensive to me, FWIW).
Yes, I do need a laser, because for one thing, lasers can excite fluorescence that can't be seen with LEDs, simply by being more intense. See the paper, "Laser-Stimulated Fluorescence in Paleontology" by Thomas Kaye, Amanda Falk, Michael Pittman, Paul Sereno, Larry Martin, David Burnham, Enpu Gong, Xing Xu, and Yinan Wang. I'd link you, but it won't let me. However, the bigger issue for me is that I want to do it from a distance, and I can't get up close with an LED in this case because the things I want to image are high up on brick walls. The plan is to stick with 405nm for now.

Laser modules (rather than pointers) are fine for my application, since eventually it's going to be integrated with a turntable to electronically sweep the beam across the scene. Laser will be controlled by Artuino, with some kind of manual kill switch probably for safety.

Yeah, I may get in touch with Lifetime17 for advice if nothing else.

I know (see username...) but I was looking for something more like 375nm. Someone put something like a 375nm on the board not long ago, but I couldn't recall what kind of diode it was.
Talk to phillip from live laser systems, he has such diodes available at moderate powers for cheap directly from nichia.
 
Those 375s were Ushio, not nichia. Otherwise agree, phillip is the way to go right now for one. Though a word of warning, those diodes are very sensitive to heat and have an operating range of 20-30C. I'd hate like heck to see one die from what usually gets considered normal use.

Sharp is entering the UV market as well with a 395nm diode, which is way more robust, though also way more visible.

That's great. I don't see why 405 nm would be a big problem for this application.

Just as an aside, though, if you want the Laser instead of the LED, because you can excite the fluorescence more efficiently with a laser, but the off-the-shelf LEDs are several orders of magnitude more powerful than equivalently-priced lasers, I feel like that point really sort of loses its purpose, unless you have limited electrical power available. You can focus LED light and you could still use the same lens to make a line. The light just won't be coherent and will have a slightly lower q factor (amplitude versus wavelength), so I really don't see why an LED would be inapplicable to this application.
 
That's great. I don't see why 405 nm would be a big problem for this application.
Oh, it's not a problem, just shorter seems to be better from my LED experiments. For now, 405nm remains the plan. By the above conversation, the UV lasers are too fickle for my needs anyway, although I may test them out at some point.

save your $$$ and buy a dpss system.
Huh, is dpss used at 405nm or shorter? I don't recall seeing any.
 
You can find DPSS lasers that use third harmonics to get to 266nm. But, they can be expensive. They also can be quite powerful, though.
 
Ah, yeah, that’s probably too shortwave anyway. Some things do visible-fluorescence there but I haven’t tested in that part of the spectrum.
 
Just a thought as you really didn't specify which wavelengths you needed to exclude. Besides, now you know. :)

It looks good on paper, but I wanted to know the local opinion (or if the seller is on the board even, or known to you all).
Yes, it's legit and I'm a member here. The shear output power of this diode makes it pretty extreme compared to any other diode in this wavelength.
 
Yeah, that was a typo. Sorry for that. Most often frequency doubling is how many DPSS lasers work.
