Is something approaching 1W of 532nm possible in a big handheld ?

I've seen a 1W portable green available for sale in a products list before. There was even a thread here about it.. and yes, it uses a 5W diode. The company rep posted here to answer questions about it.

How they regulate the non-linear optics relative temp?? I have no clue.

They might need more battery current for a TEC!

I actually have a few of the A123 Lifepo4's on order. I was just thinking since their recommended fully charged state is 3.6V can I charge them with my normal 18650 charger?
Actually I have no idea :D You should look into Li-po charger for those, don't improvise with these cells, they hold incredible power inside them, and should be treated with respect.

Believe it or not but there is a whole world of brand name 18650 cells available out there (LG, Samsung etc...), which do come in in the capacity I mentioned and beyond. I own two DX cells, which as you mentioned are indeed complete crap...I power all my lasers from Samsung 2600mAh cells. I wouldn't trust a DX cell over .5C imo. Name brand on the other hand...lovely! BTW: A great source is a laptop which doesn't charge anymore...generally too expensive to fix...but can be powered through cord...battery pack is then useless and viola... very decent 18650 cells!

I don't disagree that a D-cell would be superior in terms of high current applications...what I am disagreeing with is the statement in the post I quoted.

Yes LiFe batteries are indeed quite nice, problem is capacity TBH, they are superior to LiIon in every other way. However I fail to see the relevance...
I was more like thinking out loud what the posibilities here are, and I agree with you fully.

To me , usually "not ideal" means a general "no go" hence it most certanly does not pay to have such a constructed laser, because , battery lifetime and duty cycles aside, drawing immense current from 18650's would be far from appropriate because as we have seen, unquality batteries tend to f*ck sh*t up.

Oh and, I know there are much more quality batteries available, problem is that the cash to me is not available :D
 
1W of green would require a 5W pump diode, which needs just over 6 A to operate normally - way above any reccomended current draw from any 18650 if you want them to live over 1 hour. Or at least not explode agressively.

This is easily doable with 2 18650, maybe even one if you used an unprotected. Protected AW 18650s (basically the best) will give you 5A continuous (safely). Two of them will give you an average of 7.4v*5A, or 37 watts. Assume only 80% driver efficiency, that gets cut down to 29.6 watts. Assume your diode is only 20% efficient, you get an IR output of almost 6 watts. These are all basically worst case scenario numbers, best case scenario a single unprotected AW 18650 would be able to handle it without permanent damage.

Dude, we already concluded it's doable and I was already corrected. Problem with that is that there are many other alternative way other than 18650 to power it, which would be a better choice.

They arent as expensive as they used to be either. I was looking for a new 9 cell my MSI wind to make it last forever on battery power, only $40. which comes out to $4.40 per cell. Not sure if its 18650s inside, but if it is, its worth buying just to rip apart.
