i just noticed a few mins ago that there are "wings" extending from either side of the dot once it is on something. Is this what mode hopping means? or could this be a low battery problem. i cant take a picture right now but just pretend that this face is the dot. 
and there are lines on the left and right of it getting a little wider the further it gets from the center. thanks for the help all.
