i had a question, not because i want to try it or something, but somebody asked me about it..
would it be possible to ignite e.g. gunpowder or other stuff with this:

If you have 100 mw you can light gunpowder, it may take a bit of aiming but I have done it with 50 mw, you can get aixiz modules for around $4 each shipped by aixiz.net...

and I would suggest a microboost drive or a flexdrive for a few more bucks.

In other words, yes, that will work.

and i haven't very much experience with assembling lasers, so maybe you could send a link with a microboost drive or a flexdrive which is good enough? I can search, but i don't know which one is good...
and I can't find a aixiz module for $4 each on aixiz.com (aixiz.net isn't working, so I think you mean aixiz.com?)

Well heres a link to Flex drives from the maker himself, dr.lavas flex drive

your diode witt be dependent on power and color you choose, for a nice blue that is very powerful an A140 like this will do you good.

But most important of all, safety! you will need to get a pair of laser safety goggles that are for the color range you are looking for and a proper optical density, before you invest in this hobby i suggest you stay here a while first and do some reading and researching here. it will do you much good.

yes, I think that if the one I who asked me about it, wants to make it, he will just use the lpc-815 diode, because that diode is also good enough, and the color doesn't matter...
(my english is sometimes not so good, but that's because i'm from holland ;P)

Just don't burn yours, or anyone else's house down doing stuff like this.. Or any other stupid acts.. This hobby is getting enough bad press lately with morons illuminating aircraft with lasers. Someone causing property damage or worse with one isn't something we really need either.

Yes this is much agreed on the above that we don't need any bad press on lasers. Also, do you really need to light gunpowder with a laser, fuses have worked really well for the past several hundred years, they can be made from your gunpowder and cotton string very easily and cheaply and made waterproof and very reliable, also can be bought very cheaply premade here http://www.cannonfuse.com/store/pc/home.asp

gunpowder is different than blackpowder (Kno3,S and C). blackpowder is typically used for making black-match fuse. dont use gunpowder for it.

it will also depend on the quality of your blackpowder. ive seen crappy bp only go up with a blow torch but the guy had no clue what he was doing. may i ask what type you want it for? HE will certainly work no matter the color as long as it is a primary. cause you cant detonate an high explosive unless a. you have a blasting cap which has a primary inside or b. you are igniting a primary by itself. but i wouldn't mess with much of that especially primary's as those are very sensitive. that's why blasting caps contain a primary explosive because it will detonate with a fuse flame and will then set off the the other secondary HE

no you need nitrocellulose lacquer to make a fuse waterproof...

i also highly doubt this guy is going to use this to light all his firecrackers with as it would be unpractical after a while. i assume this guy just wants to light a small pile of bp and watch it go wooooooshh! give this guy a break as im sure no one wants any press at ALL.

just buy yourself fuse as blackmatch is more work then its worth unless you have the formula right and can keep the consistency right, or the final product will be crap and unreliable. buy it online and you hands will thank you.

listen, first of all, I've said it before, but it seems like some people here don't listen, it is not for myself, a friend of mine is doing a kind of research for his school, and it is NOT FOR FUN so i thought that people would seriously answer my question AND believe me, but it seems like that wasn't possible here.. that's pretty sad..
But just for the guys who can't read, i'll say it a third time, extra clear:

Sigh. And here comes the huffiness. Nobody believes that this is about your "friend", because your friend could have posted the question as easily as you did (though I suppose if I were to give you the benefit of the doubt, you might have posted this because your friend doesn't speak English). Also, we (or at least I) do not care whether it is you or your friend who wants to know. It's a bad idea, and you (and/or your friend) will likely end up burning yourself (like I did).

Anyway, I thought I answered your question fairly directly: Yes, it is possible to ignite stuff with a laser of sufficient power. Most varieties of gunpowder are black, or nearly so, making them susceptible to any color laser (an LPC emits red light), as black absorbs light at all wavelengths.

I can't imagine why anybody would need to do this for a "school research" project, or that any school would let you do it. But if you really must, I would recommend buying some flash paper online, marking it with a sharpie, and lighting that with the laser. Flash paper burns more quickly, completely, and safely than gunpowder, making it much less likely that you'll start a major structural fire.

Dude, do you really know what the hell your talking about, I said it can be made water proof, Nitrocellulose is easier to obtain than a laser, gun powder, it's components are probably in your garage...
