I am new to the laser world and I have been learning a lot off of this forum. I currently do not own a laser, but I am interested. I am wondering what effect does an IR filter have on a laser? Does it make a laser somewhat safer? I do understand the dangers of lasers and that a filter should not make you relax your safety awareness.

Thanks ahead of time for answering!

Green lasers use a frequency doubling crystal which converts the 1064nm (nanometer) wavelength to 532 (halves the wave-length)

In that process, the IR (1064nm) is left over along with the green and an IR filter removes the extra IR without affecting the greens performance. It is also safer but you should be using safety goggles anyway :)

You will need to to a lot more reading on DPSS Lasers and
how they produce Laser light using an Infra Red (IR) Laser Diode.
Then you will see why IR Filters are important...

The information is all over the Forum....

Enjoy your stay...:yh:

@ LaZeRz...

In the case of 523nm (green) Lasers the goggles would need to block
the 532nm + 808nm + 1064nm...
The cheaper Red tinted goggles do not block the IR...

MarioMaster sells some for $6.95 that you can add to that green :)

You can also ask Jayrob to add it for you.

Jayrob is an awesome guy, you won't be disappointed!
