Your first diagram is of the hydrogen wave function. It is a prediction of where the electron might be given different energy states. The second one is of what seems to be the TEM modes for a laser like a He-Ne laser. They are interesting to look at, but more importantly what they have to say about the experimental situation of each.
 
and to boot, I see the same image in both eyes, double the intrigue.
