Inside a DX 30mW Green (link)

Hey, you live in Ottawa, Canada too! :o I just saw that on your CPF profile. Sorry for the threadjack just wanted to say, thats pretty cool there are other laser enthusiasts here. :D

That it is good to see another member from Ottawa. And, with this post, posting pics and links should be now OK! Cheers,

Paul

Curiosity go the better of me.  Took my green 30mW Laser apart.  Here are a couple of pics of the board.  (This is the same post as from CPF)

The board has a couple of Zetex transistors to drive the LD, a dual Op Amp, a LM431 for voltage reference, and several passive components (resistor dividers, pot, caps).

I doubt this board would ever stay in "regulation" with 2x NiMH batteries.  The LM431 is a shunt regulator configured for 2.5V and NiMH batteries would not provide enough voltage.  I haven't done a full schematic of this yet.

On the MAJORITY of the DX (NewWish) lasers, the IR filter is right on the emmission side of the MCA. I have seen them on the outside of the final collimating lense, but rarely. Most of hte time, unles you completely dissassemble them you wil not see the IR filter - but I can assure you that it DOES in fact exist :-)

did you find an IR filter in there?

I have not opened up the module, but it is not on the outside.

I have to do some more circuit analysis, but I am going to see if it will tolerate a 10440 Li-ion and a spacer. It's a matter of:

1. can the components can handle the voltage and still work within design parameters
2. will the feedback design limit the current to the LD

Oh ya, this laser will light a match (sharpied) using a focusing lens.  Should a 30mW laser be able to do that?

By the way, I tried this with just the lens and with the lens and a seperate IR filter I pulled from an old video camera. The match lit up both with and without the IR filter.

Ya - just about any power of laser will light stuff with a lense....I have even heard of 5mw lasers being able to do so with an external lense !

my 30 can't light anything for some reason?????? :'( so is the ir fliter embedded in the laser somewhere, not where you can see it? :-?

Chimo,

Let us know when you get the circuit schematic reverse engineered. I am interested in it. My DX 50 probably has the same circuit. Mine seems to have variations in the output like an underdamped circuit. I'm curious why and if it can be tweaked.
