Hi there

I am doing a design project at school that requires me to incorporate laser trails from a projector screen onto a computer screen and map its exact location. So if a presenter points a laser pointer on a screen, I would detect its position on a computer. There are two parts of the project, the sensing part and the image processing part. I am thinking of using a camera to record the video and process the frames later, but I am not sure if that could work since the laser pointer would be atleast 25 m away.

The other option I thought is use an infrared camera to detect it and process the frames later, but again I am not sure about it and thought I could get some advice if I post it here. The laser pointer to be used would be a normal one that you can buy for cheap (what a presenter would use for presentations).

So do you guys have any suggestion on where I should start?

I'd have a look at this project: Graffiti Research Lab » L.A.S.E.R. Tag

They do exactly what you're wanting to do, which is detecting a laser pointer with a regular webcam and getting it's position. They have released the program, and also the source code I believe.
