Importing a laser module or laser diode to Australia.

Hi im new here and im starting to become very interested in lasers, though here in Australia you can get lasers over 1mW or import them. But i have read in a few places that you can import laser diodes or laser modules, there are actually some laser modules sold here but the highest i found is only 10mW.

So is it possible to import a laser module or laser diode of any wattage?

If i am able to import, are there any good tutorials for making a laser pointer which is at least 100mW or over. Preferably green

yep only thing thats illegal to import is a complete battery operated portable laser or laser pointer that exceeds an output power of 1mw.

I've gotten modules, diodes, host etc in no problems.

Ask bobhaha what happened when he imported a Green laser MODULE :barf:
They have no idea what they take and dont care about it.

As long as they are not complete battery operated lasers, customs should not confiscate them.

Perhaps they would care about any import taxes and duties if it is a large order, and perhaps they'd also investigate the purpose of the content in that case?

Yeh benm that's what I was wondering, not so much the taxes/duties but the investigation itself. Must you have a license to import a bulk amount or is it perfectly fine for a hobbyists to import 10 laser modules ( they would only be 5mW)

Just like to add that I got a 445nm laser diode pressed into an aixiz module from DTR and received it fine in Sydney

my personal preference is importing things from different sellers:

E.g buy a driver from one seller and a diode from another sell, just so they don't put 2 and 2 together and catch on to what you are doing, also don't buy in big quantities, its less sus.

Hey fiddy can customs take a large amount of modules, I mean if they are not aloud to take a single module why should they be allowed to confiscate say 10* modules ?

i suppose customs can confiscate whatever they want if they think it poses a threat to Australia.

Buying in small quantities lowers the risk of, well that my theory anyway.

so there is still a risk on importing a single module? I though any laser that wasn't already hooked up to batteries was fine :(

there is always risk but its very low on single modules.
i always get the seller to mark the package as electronics or LED related stuff.
