Just got my new Laptop on Monday.  The resolution is pathetic AND I can type faster than it !!!!  Seriously, as I type this it is lagging behind !!  I was under the impression this thing was some super quick(for a Laptop anyway), you beaut bit of kit !!  I spoke to Dell but they seem to be clueless as to what the problem is, even after 1.5 hours on the phone running diagnostics, re-booting, etc., as instructed by them.  Man I really don't know what it's problem is.  Anyone heard of this lag when typing ?

Re: I'm not impressed !!!!!!!!!!

The only think i can think of is the operation system Window Vista. I have a new laptop as well with Vista, and its HOORRRRIBLY slow.
I had to upgrade it from 1GB internal memory to 2GB to get it workable. Loading for the most simple programs are still horrible. but its workable now..

I'm considering to downgrade to Windows XP at the moment, or even better, to Ubuntu linux. Vista is really like hardened tar for you pc, new or old.

Maybe a memory upgrade will do it too for you (yes even on your new laptop) otherwise just ask for a downgrade to XP.. which is actually an upgrade in performance and compatibilty though.

Re: I'm not impressed !!!!!!!!!!

Hey thanks for the reply. But when I ordered it I opted for XP Professional instead of Vista, basically because I don't have the time at this stage to learn a new OS. Also it has 2.4Ghz duo-core processor and came with 2GB of RAM. So it is still a mystery as to what the problem is. I am going to upgrade to 4GB of RAM at a later date, Dell just wanted too much money for the extra RAM. Man I really hate PC's

Re: I'm not impressed !!!!!!!!!!

Make sure your running a 64-bit operating system or else the 4GB RAM won't be recognized.

Re: I'm not impressed !!!!!!!!!!

well, if you ask me.. it's should not perform that slow for windows XP Pro on a new laptop. especially when you type faster then the CPU speed itself, it's like going back in time to Window millenium or so (of Vista in my situation).

Something definitly isn't right .. i guess it won't be solved with the upgrade to 4Gb .. or maybe just temporary.
Actually i would ask Dell for a complete replacement of the total unit. this is not how it suppose to operate for a new laptop.

In europe we have the law to return any purchase made within 30 days when purchased online or by phone, regardless the reason you give for return. and they have to replace it with a similar new item or total money back.

Maybe something to consider doing as well , if your country lives by the same rules on purchasing items by phone or internet?

Re: I'm not impressed !!!!!!!!!!

Yeah i'm definately thinking I'll get it replaced Laq.  I've e-mailed some screen shots of the resolution to a Dell tech. but havn't heard anything back yet.  This also has twin 8700GT graphics cards and just have a look at the resolution in these screen shots, also the lines generated when scrolling down a page.

Yeah I do, or did, have the option to upgrade to Vista 64-bit. Is there a 64-bit version of XP ?

Re: I'm not impressed !!!!!!!!!!

It may be a production defect due to something dumb like accidentally leaving conductive shavings in a circuit path. I ran into similar a few times, and the lag was due to numerous bus retries in trying to pass data.

Re: I'm not impressed !!!!!!!!!!

could as well be a defective video card by the looks of that. The screenshots look crappy indeed for resolution, combined with the slow rendering when typing something. If you ask me, its the video graphics card that is causing all of this.

I see you have an XPS, those monster should not have the problems you sum up at all. if the reply from Dell techsupport isn't solving the problem, i'dd go for a replacement. :)

Re: I'm not impressed !!!!!!!!!!

Did you say "Twin" graphics cards????

Since it's a laptop, I asume they ere integrated on the MB...

Are they conf. to run in SLI mode???

If they are set to run as intependents, then I think that is your Culprit!

You need to make sure they are in tru SLI mode..otherwise they could be fighting over resources.

Other than that...Spyware or a virus become the next logical place to look.

Don't laugh....
Remember when Windows 95 came out???

Anyone that bought Windows 95 on Floppy disk (And there were a TON of disks) got a virus just from loading the OS!!!
If Microsoft can get hit like that...ANYONE CAN!!!!!

Good Luck!!

Larry

Yes, I run it and it is the best operating system Microsoft ever created IMO. I refuse to upgrade to Vista.

Re: I'm not impressed !!!!!!!!!!

Definitely something wrong with that machine, man....MINE runs slower than piss - 2gb or RAM with Vista home premium (came with it) I jsut tried to run the game "diablo" on it - and I may just sell this thing, and build a desktop out here in my workshop instead ! Man - diablo is unplayable, and it was made for win 95 !!!

Re: I'm not impressed !!!!!!!!!!

Good to know Gazoo, I will definately get the 64-bit version of XP when this piece of garbage is sorted.

Larry I will see if the SLI thing is enabled and see if that makes the difference, thanks. GreyFox possibly has a good point also, though I don't want to pull it apart if I might be returning it.

I'd wipe it and load either a copy of XP or Linux on it. Vista isn't worth the paper the little booklet is made of. It's spackle and bondo, and all it does is add unbearable weight to a core that isn't otherwise half bad for a commercial venture. If you're truly looking to get rid of it, what are the specs and what would you be asking for it?

Re: I'm not impressed !!!!!!!!!!

looks like your graphics cards aren't working - the low resolution and lines when scrolling are a dead giveaway of that - if the drivers say all clear i would definitely return it - there's no way a system like that would be bogged by xp

Yeah unless you guys have got any other ideas it looks like i'll be sending it back. I downloaded some 3DMark program and got a score of 4980 which from what i've read is way too low for this system ?? So I guess that points to the grapics cards ?
