Hi, I'm pretty new here, but have already had some big troubles with this community, after purchasing a laser. I recently spent $100 dollars in the form of visa gift card that I got for christmas on a laser from a user known as jake21.

Jake is a good guy, not a scammer, and seems to invest a lot of heart into the quallity of his lasers, but the problem is they arent what he promised. He promised me a 175 mW laser that could light matches, and I was quite excited. Well he clearly over promised because he sent me a laser that could not light matches, by my estimates (based on performance) was around 60 mW.

And now the diode broke. After about an hour of use, less than a day of having it broke. He recently sent me a message about it saying that if you use it for more than 30 seconds at a time the diode might burn out. 30 seconds? Im no expert but Im sure that I would have gotten better quality from a Deal extreme laser.

We've sent many PMs, and he is really committed, but I dont know he seems like someone who will act innocent, but is really just wants to make his money.

So what can I really do? I'm just a kid, and have no money left to be lasers, and now have one that has an invisible beam at more than 6 feet away.

I just want your input on how to handle this situation. Most people around here seem to be really strong community workers.
 





If the laser was putting out 175mw's then it was being driven with around 250ma's of current. Pushing the diode that hard does require short duty cycles...but I am not sure about 30 seconds. It depends on how well the diode is heatsinked, and whether or not it was a SenKat diode, or a diode Jake harvested from a DVD burner. We would some more info. Like...what did he use for the host, which driver.

I must ask the obvious...did you try fresh batteries?

Oh, and BTW, I do not know what you mean by big troubles with this community...because we are all here to help. You might be having big troubles with the seller though.. ;)
 
oh yeah I get what you are saying, yes this community is great, but my only major experience with someone within them has been terrible, and jake is completely clueless now about that laser. I tried many pairs of batteries, and he says that might be the problem, because high voltage batteries burn it out, but how retarded is that? (sry if that is offensive to anyone)
 
Like I said we need more information about the laser. It's the only way to get to the bottom of it. Can you post a picture of it for starters?
 
Well what about the circuit? How many batteries was it using? What batteries did you try it with?
 
Dude i dont really know what to say here but that just SUCKS!!!

but thats why i would never buy from anyone unless they have a really good rep or a company with a really good rep
 
I think with buying hybrid lasers like this you are always taking a chance as you have no clue about what the LD has been through, how it has been handled, how good the built quality...and more.

I would not sell any of my home brewed lasers as I would not want to be held responsible for it once in someone elses hands as they may missuse it, either by accident or by trying to get more out of it.

The above are 2 sides of the same coin, buying and selling one-offs is a risky business. I can only suggest that you save up your money, buy the parts, then build your own laser. There is all the information you need on the forum to do this and the feeling of pride when you first light a match with it cannot be beaten.

May I suggest you go to arbitration on this? if buyer and seller can find a senior member to send the laser to, let him look at the build quality, then let him advise as to whether he thinks you are due a refund or have to take the hit as it was just unfortunate that you ended up with an expensive LED.

« Date: Jan 9th, 2008, 10:50pm » Hey, I still haven't gotten the match, but smoking black leather, and a balloon to pop, it might be that we have asfety matches or something idk, but anyway I got new duracell batteries, but when I put them in and turned on the laser it was incredibly faint, and could hardly see it, i put in a few different kinds and it never started working again


IT DOESN'T BURN MATCHES thats the fact of the matter, and I don't want this to turn ugly because we have been working together so well up till now, and its really only a 95 dollar laser not a 100 dollar one, but ever since I had problems with something you've sold me you haven't been helpful and I just spent the money I got for christmas on a laser that burnt down almost immedietly, so you tell me what you can do, and I don't know how on earth I will deal with a diode you send me, because the laser is welded shut! I don't care if matches burnt for you because they didnt for me and I spent 20 minutes trying!



lighting leather poping baloons sounds like it worked for u till u ran it for 20 minutes i no u ran it to long and the diode got hot and u fried it now ur turning it all back on me because u killed the diode and if u are a member on here do u read on how to runa laser and about voiltage spikes when senkat sells his diodes does he give a refund back ur takinga chance with lasers i no it lit matches and every thing i have proof of that any one want the proof from me ask ill be glad to give it to every one
 
i dont mean this in a bad way, but do you know how to focus the laser properly? it usually needs to be a very fine dot in order to light a match. if your still having problems, try using a black marker (sharpie) on the match. black will absorb more light. sorry if you already know this, just trying to state what may not to obvious to someone just getting into lasers.
