$500 + for a NON-WORKING HeNe? Showa HeNe Laser GLG5414 Not Working AS-IS | eBay

I'm not understanding why they would think that it's worth that when it doesn't work. If it was something a little more exotic, like an Argon, or even a green HeNe, then maybe- if it could be fixed. But a plain ol' HeNe? :wtf:

Would you pay that much for a broken/non-working laser of any kind? If so, why?

It might be a high mW tube (~50mW), which are rare. Looks to have water cooling connections.

All his prices are high, but he does sell stuff. So it looks like he knows what he is talking about.

Doesnt make much sense.. Listed as a 20mW so there must be something special about it.

Specifications:

Model No: GLG5414
20mW max
632.8 nm

And that listing shows (for me anyway) 480.$ shipping

The only thing different that I see are the pipe fittings..

Kinda expensive for a doorstop... IMO

20mW is high for a HeNe. All the ones I've seen are 1 and 2mW.

Hey, I wouldn't buy it either. Maybe he is phishing. A lot of people do that on eBay.

Never seen a HeNe that required water cooling. My 15mW works just fine on air cooling.

Well, if your HeNe is either perfectly stabilized, IE startup power = "warmup" power

you might use water cooling.

Or if your product is otherwise very inefficient... ;)

Its a Japanese company. Not normally seen on ebay that is.

It does look kind of weird with the pipe on it. I hadn't even noticed that until it was mentioned here.

thanks tj:beer:

i saw this one and laughed at that price too. only viewed the first pic. after seeing this post i looked at the others. are we sure they're water lines?

Probably hoping some one comes past, doesn't read the post and picks it up for $500. Then when they complain that it doesn't work.. they can say it was advertised as not working

Possibly, but not likely since it says 'Not working' and 'As-Is' right in the title.

All I can say to him is, good luck selling that at that price! :na:

Just saying, 20mws of HeNe output is nice, but not all HeNe beams are the same - especially at these medium powers more variables play bigger roles in the beam.

Electrical stability, beam stability (any mode hopping?), power stability, polarization, variability of the tube optics etc.

These things (if are managed on the laser at all) can be managed in many ways.

Its all depends on the demands of the customer. I'm just saying, there COULD be legitimate reasons why a small research team would want to bid on this particular tube over buying a new one, or any other used model for that matter.

The diameter of those pipe fittings leads me to believe this can't just be a 20mw HeNe. Looks like it was designed for a very high flow rate, like something I would expect to find on a CO2 laser. (Although there isn't really much to go off for scale)

I thought the price was idiotic until I saw how much they are quoting for postage; $1282.74 for worldwide postage. I could almost buy my own 747 for that and pick it up myself!!!
