I FOUND a pretty nice host for my first flashlight

I literally FOUND this thing. It was sitting on the base of a light post and I happen to see it as I walked out of my car. It was duck taped, but other than that, it was in perfect condition. The light is strong, and it works fine.

It says it is an 'Element 3 WATT L.E.D.'. It has a battery holder that houses 3 AAA's and a led attached to what looks like what an MXDL has without a resistor on the bottom (No room for one). It is a pretty decently sized flashlight with a clickly button on the bottom. I definately will be modding this one.

I just have one question, and that is what would be the easiest way to make a driver that would fit nicely into this thing...

So, I need to figure out the best way to add a resistor or something so I don't blow my very first diodes. I got my Axiz modules, and I've been wanting to just experiment with the diodes that are in there, the only thing that is happening is the Laser works, then fades. Not quite sure, but this circuitry needs to be cleaned up and I need to get some better solder and the stuff that SenKat recommends.

Another issue I'm having is getting something to go into the little holes on the MagLight Mini's. Those things dont seem to hold very well, and I feel much better when I can solder something together.

Check out this. INstead of using straigh pins like in the picture.  Add the resistor you wanna use as one of the legs.  that looks very similair to what I'm using in the dorcy Jr.  I'm pretty sure that flashlight is from dorcy as well. there is a spring underneath just like yours and I use that to just direct the juice up to the lightboard. the driver is going to be located below in the battery chamber. Make sure you check the current and add the appropriate resistor. Since it's a 3 watt led your probably driving the led at 750ma up to 1A. that's going to be wAAAY too much for a laser diode.

I'm going to have to figure out how exactly my wiring is going to be done, and the correct amount of resistance to use. Whats a good value to drive it at? I'll have to start testing my output as soon as I can get a meter.

Well, currently I have just the new axiz module hooked directly up to the circuit (not even soldered, just held in by the springs) and it works just fine as of now. I am aware it can sill hurt the diode, but with the ones that come in it, I am not worried. I still need to figure out if one of the two pre-built ones from DX will work for my purpose. I'm pretty horrible at soldering in really tight spaces (especially with such a large soldering pin) so I'm not able to make a driver that I can fit into any type of flashlight really, or one that functions correctly for that matter.

Awesome, I dont know how I missed that before. I looked around, but didnt see any extensive reviews. Thanks Gazoo! What type of heatsinking can I do to run it without adding any resistor or capacitor however?

Please read through the thread of the link I provided. Everything is explained. You will need to put a 33ohm 1/2 watt resistor in parallel with the diode. This will absorb appx. 100ma's of current so the LD is seeing appx. 250ma's. I did also explain this in the thread...please take the time to read. ;)
