How visible is the BR beam, without smoke?

Hey all, sorry for the newbie question, but I was wondering how visible BR beams are in general.

I had a Dx 200 greenie, and the beam on that was VERY visible. I recently got a 5mw greenie, and its also pretty visible at night.

I know red beams are pretty hard to see, but I have almost no experience with red/BR beams.

Can anyone "shed some light" for me?
 





I have ~110mw blue ray, and its not very visible. When Im standing behind the beam I can see it in dim light, I can also see it pretty well in pitch darkness. Doesn't compare to green.

A lot of people are sayig that it's 405nm + or - 5nm, and if it's -5nm =400nm it's probably not going to have a visible beam in dim light.

I can barely see the beam of my 405nm module in a completely dark room. I don't know the exact power but it's less than 100mw. The beam is less visible than my 5mw greenie....I'd say that it's less visible than a 660 red at the same power.

I had one that was very visible but I think it was just a freak. it was running anywhere from 110mW-150mW :P

Thank you for pointing that out. I did in fact read that topic before making my post, and realized that I still needed some information. Your post did not give me any kind of comparison for reference, it just gave me the vague idea that BR lasers appear "dim"... And you expect me to understand without any kind of reference point?

I would say that you either didn't read it all or didn't read it well. There are at least three different points that deal with the appearance of the beam, including one that talks about it actually going beyond your eye's ability to see it at all.

In that case, I apologize for making this thread. You win... Thank you for showing me the sticky, and clearly explaining everything.
 
Also 405nm is small enough such that the beam is scattered by the molecules of the gasses that make up air. No dust needed.
 
Whenever you look at the beam, the air disperses the light to the point where your tiny dot at infinity acutally has a beam that looks like a cone instead of a tight line.

I don't think it effects the power too much. Not sure though.

Without smoke or fog, it will always look dim, honestly, nobody is trying to be vague. Your question is like asking what chocolate tastes like! If you look around the forum you can find literally hundreds of Bluray beam shots, but even photos tell you little because only your own eyes will reveal how YOU perceive it. Go to the buy, sell, trade section and take your pick, then you will have your reference. ;)
 
I have one of Jay's small Blu-Ray's. It outputs 196mw's and is very visible to me in the dark once my eyes have adjusted and I am 50+. I am attaching some photos for you. Also, the Blu-Ray is a blast to paint with. It is also known as painting-with-light. Good Luck!
