How to dream better?

I would like to learn how to dream better. This includes lucid dreaming, triggering recurring dreams, and just more vivid dreaming. I love dreams. The problem is, all the lucid dream tutorials online involve keeping a dreambook and waking yourself up in the middle of the night, neither of which I can do with my current schedule. Does anyone know how to do any of these things without massive hassle or buying products?

The dream journal is a good idea as it helps you remember your dreams. As for waking up, it doesn't have to be in the middle of the night. When you go to sleep, you quickly fall into deep (Delta wave) sleep. As the night progresses one sleeps lighter and lighter. Dreams happen during lighter REM sleep. So most of your dreams happen late in the sleep cycle. If you want to try lucid dreaming you can just set your alarm a little early and hit snooze. As you fall back to sleep, start counting and following each count with 'I'm Dreaming'. i.e.-

one, I'm dreaming
two, I'm dreaming
three, I'm dreaming...

It takes some practice to do this without staying awake. But eventually you'll fall asleep and the 'I'm dreaming' will remind you you're asleep. At this point you'll be lucid dreaming.

The first few times I succeeded, I got so excited that I woke up as soon as I became lucid. (It took a while to get used to being asleep and lucid.) It's well worth the practice though ;)

just keep on thinking on ONE thing before you sleep (bah...until you sleep :P) and i guarantee you will dream of it :)
 
I'm going to try it. The problem is, when I happen to realize I'm dreaming in the middle of class, I jolt awake and flail. My mind does not like the concept of knowing I'm dreaming.

Pull a few all-nighters in a row ;) Seriously, you will actually start hallucinating and feeling drunk by the second day. Interestingly, ever since I've been diagnosed with chronic insomnia, I haven't been able to replicate the above results...

That sucks! Can't you take some kind of medication for it?

I did that once, had a lan party at a friend's house and by the next morning we could laugh at the dumbest random object, it was quite strange ;D
 
what's so bad about lucid dreaming?
if you can control it, then it's way better!!

My doc wants to prescribe me sedatives and crap but I don't want to risk dependence. The way I see it, there have never been any documented cases where people have died as a result of insomnia. I typically get about 2-3 hours of (Non-REM) sleep per day although a few shots of the "Good stuff" helps ;)

I know lucid dreaming sounds cool, but my mind always freaks out and I spaz out and wake up. At least in school, anyway (it's boring.)
