How best to learn about laser circuits?

I've worked around lasers in an industrial setting, but never as the laser expert. My son & I are starting to put some lasers together from parts. I understand the basic physics, but I'm not sure how to set up the circuits & how to manage the power requirements. Where is a good place to view some schematics & learn what the different components do? I'm using this as a teaching opportunity & some quality father/son time. Thanks.
